Long Beach Opera Presents Camelia la Tejana – Only the Truth at the Terrace Theater
2013-03-20 · By Editor
The Long Beach Opera fuses classical and Mexican influences to create their latest production, Camelia la Tejana – Only the Truth, by Mexican Composer Gabriela Ortiz at the Terrace Theater this Sunday, March 24th, at 2PM and Saturday, March 30th, 2013, at 8PM.
This videopera, a hybrid genre better described as a contemporary video-opera documentary, follows Camelia La Tejana and her lover as they smuggle drugs across the border to Los Angeles, where the payoff becomes a deadly showdown.
Camelia la Tejana – Only the Truth explores the creation of a popular myth when fact and fiction get mixed up and fuel popular retelling and mythology through media. The opera weaves together these truths and legends, their facts and fictions, ever seeking and transforming the truth while portraying a painful analytic narration of the harsh reality of drug trafficking and migration in northern Mexico.
The production is conducted by Andres Mitisek, who is celebrating his 10th season as the Long Beach Opera’s Artistic and General Director for the company.
“It is always a pleasure to have the Long Beach Opera at the Terrace Theater,” said Dan Spellens, Director of Theaters & Entertainment for SMG at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center. “Their performances always impress and provide the audience with a vivid cultural experience,” he concluded.
