Long Beach Organic (LBO) invites community members, families and friends to attend its 1st Annual Summer Solstice Celebration, to be held at the Wild Oats Community Garden on June 21 from 1 to 6 p.m.
Member gardeners have spent the past several months revitalizing and renovating the garden, making it the perfect venue for a traditional, country fair-style summer event. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the garden, see the variety of abundant fruits and vegetables being produced at the peak of the growing season, and learn more about organic gardening principles.
The event will also feature an artisan market, focusing on homegrown and handmade goods. Primal Alchemy, a catering company owned by Wild Oats gardener Chef Paul Buchanan, will have delicious seasonal fare on hand for all to taste. Guests can also enjoy live music throughout the day, a petanque (or bocce) tournament, kids activities, a cakewalk and more!
“We’re hoping to make this our signature annual event at Wild Oats Garden,” said Joe Corso, LBO Board Member and founder of Wild Oats Community Garden’s innovative composting program.
All proceeds will benefit Long Beach Organic, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to the creation and management of organic community gardens within the city of Long Beach.
Wild Oats Community Garden boasts more than 70 garden plots, tended by garden members, who pay semi-annual dues and serve an annual requirement of 12 community work-hours contributing to the upkeep and beautification of the garden’s shared spaces. The garden is one of five managed by Long Beach Organic, a 501c(3) organization founded by local activist Charles Moore in 1994. It also features a grape arbor and fruit tree orchard.
Wild Oats Community Garden is located just north of 10th St., between Loma and Grand Ave. Parking for the Summer Solstice Celebration will be available on surrounding streets, as well as in an open lot across the street from the garden.
