Long Beach P.E.A.C.E. Basketball League Tips Off Today

Councilmember Al Austin will be speaking and participating in the tip off ceremony to kick off the first game of the P.E.A.C.E. (“Positive Energy Activates Constant Elevation”) Basketball League. The league is co-sponsored by Councilmember Austin and Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine. P.E.A.C.E. Basketball will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. beginning today, February 26 at Eastman Boys and Girls Club, 700 East Del Amo Blvd.

“The goal of the program is to promote a stronger sense of community within our younger generation,” Councilmember Austin said. “We want to give young people recreation opportunities, enhance their lives through quality workshops and promote good citizenship. This program is modeled after the Midnight Basketball program which was highly successful at reducing violence while enriching the lives of young people.”

The Long Beach P.E.A.C.E. Basketball League is a free program that encourages healthy living while providing participants with the skills to confront everyday problems in a positive manner. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 25. The program consists of a 10-week basketball season and an “all star” game as well as workshops. There will be two basketball games and one workshop per week. Workshops topics include, but are not limited to, money management, job skills, etiquette, anger management, a workshop entitled “Why’d You Stop Me?” and nutrition and fitness.

The program is funded by one-time funds allocated to Parks, Recreation and Marine from the Eighth Council District.
