Three hilarious ladies will showcase their comedic dexterity when StandOut Productions brings the 2011 premier show of the “Curiously Strong Comedy” national tour to the Center Theater/Long Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 19th, at 8pm. The show will feature the legendary Vickie Shaw and rising stars Gloria Bigelow and Jackie Monahan.
Texas native Vickie Shaw is one of today’s hottest lesbian comics. As a mother of three and grandmother of one, Shaw was the poster girl for the traditional family—until she came out as a lesbian, ended her marriage, and began performing as a stand-up comic. She grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family and first tried stand-up at an open mic night after 18 years of marriage and was hooked. Since then, she’s taken her humor to TV, stand-up venues, and women’s festivals, usually performing to sold-out shows.
Shaw can be seen in the award-winning film “Laughing Matters…More,” along with her own standup comedy special: “You Can Take the Girl Outta Texas…,” currently airing on MTV’s LOGO Network and available on DVD. She has been featured on COMEDY CENTRAL’s Premium Blend, WE Network’s “The Secret Lives of Women: Late-in-Life Lesbians,” and LOGO’s Wisecrack comedy series.
Gloria Bigelow’s witty and honest brand of humor keeps her audiences laughing, thinking and wanting more. Bigelow or Glo, as she is called, recently performed as a part of the New York Underground Comedy Festival, Michigan Women’s Music Festival, and the 2009 Outlaugh Comedy Festival. A crowd favorite, Bigelow tackles issues of sexuality, race, and gender at the forefront of her work and has become one to watch on the national comedy scene.
Jackie Monahan is taking the New York and Los Angeles comedy scenes by storm. She has quickly become a local favorite at Gotham Comedy Club, Caroline’s on Broadway, and The Laugh Factory. When she is not on tour she can be found doing spots on Maxim’s Sirius radio and VH1 shows. Look out for Monahan as you are sure to see her on your television in her “One Night Stand Up” special for LOGO. She also has a hit podcast “Girls on Girls” for the HERE! Network. Monahan was the winner of Time Out New York’s Joke of the year in 2008 and was also nominated for ECNY’s Best Female Stand Up comedian.
