It is an all ages event with food and alcohol sold on the premises.

The Roller Derby is an entertaining game for spectators with real, local action on the rink. Different from the traditional roller derby of decades ago, the new game is is 100 percent real roller derby with no fake fighting, hair-pulling, elbows or chair-throwing.

Get in the mood for the first roller derby bout by meeting the Long Beach league members on Friday March 26. The LBRD will convene at 7 p.m. for a ‘meet and greet’ at Moxi Roller skate shop.

For those not familiar with Roller Derby, the sport is played on an oval track with two teams on quad (traditional four wheel) skates. Each team has five players on the track at a time, four blockers and one jammer. The object is to move your jammer past the other team’s blockers while the other team tries to do the same all while skating quickly around the track. One point is scored for each opposing blocker passed. Roller Derby is a fast paced exciting game with scoring periods called “jams” last last about 2 minutes for the entirety of the one hour game. The game is enhanced with the players adopting campy alter ego names like “Ida Capitate” and “Blanche Deatharow.”

LBRD is Long Beach’s premiere, all-female competitive roller derby league. Their game is real and their girls are local. They are currently raising funds for their very own “banked-track.”

Ticket prices for the April 9 Roller Derby at the Dome are $15 for General Admission and $25 for VIP seats. After the game, there will be a one-hour after party with the players at the Dome. More information and pre-sale tickets are available for purchase at LongBeachRollerDerby.com, brownpapertickets.com/event/102329 and locally at Moxi Skate Shop, 2132 E. 4th St., LB 90814.
