LBSO Petting Zoo at Long Beach Library

The LBSO Instrument Petting Zoo returns to Long Beach libraries this summer.

Looking for fun and educational activities for your children this summer? The Long Beach Symphony can help with that. The Symphony’s Ovation! Volunteers will, once again, host seven free Instrument Petting Zoo events at various neighborhood libraries. These programs are designed to pique the interest of very young children – sometimes as young as 3 years old – in making music, and the first one will take place June 14 from 11:30-12:30 p.m. at Brewitt Library, 4036 E. Anaheim Street.

Using orchestra-owned musical instruments, the Symphony volunteers explain how the instruments of the orchestra work, how they make different sounds, and how they fit into the orchestra. Following the volunteers’ presentation, children have a chance to hold and play these instruments – a unique one-hour opportunity for children and parents alike. For many, it is love at first sight and first sound! Though there is no age limit for the program, the Instrument Petting Zoo is ideal for pre-school and first graders, as the program is a precursor to the Long Beach Symphony’s more in-depth Elementary Ensemble school visits in the 2nd- and 3rd-grades.

The full schedule for the Instrument Petting Zoo includes:
Saturday, June 14 11:30 – 12:30 pm Brewitt Library
Thursday, June 19 11:00 – 12:00 pm Dana Library
Thursday, June 26 12:30 – 1:30 pm Main Library
Thursday, July 10 11:00 – 12:00 pm Bach Library
Thursday, July 17 3:00 – 4:00 pm Burnett Library
Tuesday, July 22 4:00 – 5:00 pm Twain Library
Wednesday, August 20 3:00 – 4:00 pm Cerritos Library

So, whether you’re raising a classical music prodigy or a rock star, the Instrument Petting Zoo is a good place to let your young one dip his or her toe into the world of musical instruments.
