“Living Our Gifts”—a free community Holiday eventOn Sunday, December 9th, Long Beach Time Exchange members in conjunction with the Cultural Alliance of Long Beach will host “Living Our Gifts”—a free community event which includes food, film screenings, holiday card making, a “green elephant” gift exchange, and information about time banking—a system where time, rather than money, is the unit of exchange. The event runs from 3-6pm at the Bungalow Art Center at 727 Pine Ave. in Long Beach.

Screenings of the films The Economics of Happiness and Sacred Economics will highlight some of the networks that are emerging to address pressing global issues. Co-founder Tony Damico explained, “Our current economic system often devalues the things that we have in abundance, like the ability to help out our neighbors, create works of art, or support the health and well-being of our families and communities. Networks organized around sharing our gifts make it possible for people to make ends meet while improving the quality of their lives and building resilient communities.”

Founded in 2010, the mission of the Long Beach Time Exchange is to build and strengthen relationships within the city of Long Beach by connecting people’s unmet needs and untapped resources. The organization currently has over 300 active members.

When a member does something to help another member, she or he earns “time credits” for the amount of time spent. That member can then spend his or her time credits with anyone else in the time-exchange network. Current offers and requests by time-exchange members include childcare, financial planning and tax preparation, nutritional consulting, tutoring, voice and guitar lessons, help around the house, rides to the airport and medical appointments, participation in community activities, and more.

The Long Beach Time Exchange is fiscally sponsored by Catalyst Network of Communities and is part of the Building Healthy Communities initiative. The Long Beach Time Exchange is also part of the TimeBanks USA network, which is connected to time banks in 42 states and 32 countries.
