Long Beach Mardi GrasMardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Carnaval – whatever you call it, it’s celebrated all over the world and it always means fun! Mardi Gras celebrations return to downtown Long Beach with the Long Beach Mardi Gras at Rainbow Harbor on Saturday, February 20.

Partnered this year with the Aquarium of the Pacific, Shoreline Village, The Pike and Gladstone’s Long Beach, the 2010 event will be bigger and better as it expands into an all day festival with free family‐friendly programs around the harbor during the day, a night‐time Mardi Gras concert and the addition of the inaugural Long Beach Mardi Gras Parade!

From noon to 6 p.m., everyone can enjoy a little taste of New Orleans for free! At the Aquarium, where they are also celebrating their African‐American Heritage Festival weekend, live music and dancing will be out on the front plaza for all to enjoy. The Pike and Shoreline Village join in on the fun too with music, dancing, bead and mask making, face painting, a kid’s costume contest and other activities for the whole family.

Restaurants, shops and entertainment venues in the area will be offering special treats and provide additional fun and revelry.

At 3 p.m., the inaugural Long Beach Mardi Gras Parade will roll along the Rainbow Harbor Esplanade from Shoreline Village to the Aquarium. This year’s theme is “Mardi Gras Loves Long Beach”, where participants get a chance to show what they love about our city! The parade will feature community groups, bands, businesses and individuals dancing to traditional Mardi Gras music and throwing beads and trinkets to the crowd.

When the sun sets, the party really gets underway at “Mardi Gras Fête”, a concert at the Rainbow Harbor Bandshell featuring multiple bands, samba and step dance performances, a DJ and lots of beads!

Gladstone’s Long Beach will offer a special menu of Louisiana‐inspired dishes and Hurricanes – the unofficial drink of New Orleans! Costumes and masks are encouraged, and everyone is invited to enter the Mardi Gras Costume Contest, where prizes will be awarded for the best dressed.

Tickets to the “Mardi Gras Fete” are available online presale at the Long Beach Mardi Gras website, www.lbmardigras.com. Long Beach Mardi Gras will once again host a food drive to benefit the Foodbank of Southern California, visit the website for details.
