Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and Hof’s Hut Raise $100,000 Through Round It Up America Initiative

Sister restaurant chains, Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and Hof’s Hut Restaurant & Bakery, have together raised $100,000 that will be split equally among Operation Homefront and Share Our Strength as part of the charitable initiative, “Round It Up America.” Launched in 2009, Round It Up America (RIUA) is a simple, consumer-driven giving program that provides an opportunity for restaurant patrons to round-up their purchases to the nearest dollar upon the close of credit card sales. All funds are then distributed to local or national charities. As one of the founding RIUA Mission Partners, Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and Hof’s Hut have played an integral role in not only strengthening the program, but profoundly impacting communities across America.
Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que was founded in 1999 and is known for its award-winning, authentic Southern Bar-B-Que menu served at its 16 restaurants in California, Arizona and Nevada. Established in 1951, Hof’s Hut Restaurant & Bakery is a casual restaurant chain serving American fare with six locations in California. Both chains are family-owned and operate under Hof’s Hut Restaurants, Inc.
“When it comes to helping those in need, every penny does really count,” said Craig Hofman, president, Hof’s Hut Restaurants, Inc. “We want to thank our charitable guests, who, by choosing to simply round up their checks, are making lives easier for America’s veterans and helping fight childhood hunger in America. The Round It Up America campaign is truly changing lives and we are honored to be a catalyst for that change.”
The Orange County Community Foundation has administered the RIUA program since 2009. To allow for a national rollout, administration responsibilities are being transferred to the American Red Cross.
Based in San Antonio, Texas, Operation Home Front was formed in February 2002 to support the families of deployed service members immediately following 9/11. It has evolved into a major national non-profit organization with 23 locations serving 27 states that provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors.
“The support from Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and Hof’s Hut is so very important to our military families,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO, Operation Homefront. “By ’rounding up’ the totals on their bills, they’ve helped turn small change into paid utility bills, rent assistance, and even food assistance for our military families, who sacrifice every day to provide the freedoms we all enjoy. With more great companies like Lucille’s and Hof’s Hut and the generosity of their customers, we can ensure our military families continue to have the support they need when they face their own crises back at home.”
Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign is ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day. More specifically, the No Kid Hungry campaign connects kids in need to effective nutrition programs like school breakfast and summer meals and, through its Cooking Matters program, teaches low-income families how to cook healthy, affordable meals at home.
“Everyone has a role in helping end childhood hunger in America,” said Billy Shore, founder and CEO of Share our Strength. “Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and Hof’s Hut recognized that. The round-up program they used this September made it easy for their customers to help. Kids in the U.S. aren’t hungry because we lack food or effective assistance programs, like school breakfast, summer meals an afterschool suppers. They are hungry because too often there are barriers that make it hard for kids to participate in these programs. We are working to eliminate those barriers so all children have access to the healthy foods they need.”
Both Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and Hof’s Hut plan to continue working with Round It Up America.
