To celebrate National Sandwich Day and help kick off a Food Drive to benefit the Long Beach Rescue Mission, Michael’s Pizzeria, located on Naples Island in Long Beach, is offering its three-course Lunch Boxes—regularly $9.00 each–for just $4.50 on Saturday, November 3. From November 3-30, each time a Lunch Box is purchased, Michael’s Pizzeria will donate a Lunch Box to the Long Beach Rescue Mission to help feed the city’s many homeless men, women and children.
“The Long Beach Rescue Mission is a phenomenal organization,” says Michael Dene, owner of both Michael’s On Naples and Michael’s Pizzeria. “For 40 years they have provided food, clothing and shelter to our city’s homeless and less fortunate population. When someone buys a Lunch Box, we donate a Lunch Box – it’s a pay-it-forward concept that the entire community can wrap their arms around.”
National Sandwich Day pays homage to the fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, born November 3, who during a 24-hour gambling event instructed his servants to serve him his lunchmeat between two slices of bread. Little did he know that he would be responsible for creating one of America’s favorite foods (and Italy’s, too).
Each Lunch Box from Michael’s Pizzeria includes a mouthwatering puccia, side salad, and Italian cookie. Puccias (which means pocket in Italian) is made from the same dough as Michael’s famed pizzas, but baked as a loaf. When fired at 850 degrees for mere minutes, it puffs up into a crisp, fluffy pocket that is then sliced and filled with an array of farm fresh vegetables, chef-grown herbs, house-made cheeses, and cured Italian meats.
Assembling one of Michael’s Pizzeria’s custom Lunch Boxes is as easy as one, two, three.
First, choose your puccia:
Sandwich layered with confit baby artichokes, mozzarella and pesto.
Sandwich with Heirloom tomato, mozzarella and basil.
Sandwich with smoked prosciutto, ricotta and arugula.
Sandwich with prosciutto di Parma, stracciatella cheese, roasted pepper and basil.
Next, select your side salad:
ORANGIC MIXED GREENS
With balsamic vinegar
POTATO, STRING BEAN & RED ONION
In a light vinaigrette
Whole grains and vegetables
And finally…a little Italian sweet to top off the meal. Everything is made from the freshest, highest quality ingredients available. Bread and cheeses are made in-house daily; cured meats are imported from Italy and sliced to order; tomatoes and herbs are grown in the restaurant’s rooftop garden; and, of course, the cookies are always made from scratch.
Michael’s Lunch Boxes are ideal for working luncheons, in-flight dining, a day at the beach, boating excursions, picnics, outdoor concerts or any time the occasion calls for a meal on the move, these moveable feasts are the grown up version of your classic sack lunch.
The restaurant, which was just named Best Pizzeria in all of Los Angeles by Zagat earning a 28 out of 30 food rating, will offer its $9 Lunch Boxes at half-price—just $4.50 each–on National Sandwich Day taking place on Saturday, November 3 from 12noon-3pm and, for every Lunch Box purchased between November 3-30, Michael’s Pizzeria will donate a Lunch Box to the Long Beach Rescue Mission.
“It would be extremely satisfying on delivery day if we had a truckload of Lunch Boxes to bring to the Long Beach Rescue Mission,” added Dene. “So many people in our community are blessed with roofs over their heads, food on their tables, good health, and support from their families. It’s humbling when you see so many others —right in our own city—doing without the most basic necessities.”
