Marine Summer Camps offer an Oceanic Experience for Kids

The Aquarium of the Pacific Summer 2010 camp schedule is available with camps open for enrollment according to age and grade. Week-long camps take place in June, July and August with a variety of educational themes including: Junior Biologist, Sea Squirt Camp, Fish Fry Camp, Ocean Adventure Day Camp, and Marine Science Sleepover Camp. Bayshore Marine Biology Camp
Ages 9-12 (must have completed 3rd grade). Marine Biology enthusiasts will explore a variety of aquatic sports and activites. The camp includes sailing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, crafts, field trips & features environmental activities. 11 one-week sessions, June 21-September 3, 9am-4pm. Fee is $145. Extended day care, 7-9am & 4-6pm at additional cost of $25-$50 per week. Check out the Long Beach Parks website for all the details.
Ocean Adventure Camp – Long Beach Marine Institute
Ocean Adventure Camp is an exciting educational camp for ages 5-12. This summer experience is a unique hands-on approach to marine science. Each week has a different ocean related theme and is filled with projects, crafts and aquatic fun designed to promote ocean sciences and conservation. Campers will enjoy weekly field trips, kayaking, snorkeling, an expedition on a research vessel and much, much more. Ocean Adventure Camp runs for nine weeks from June to August.
Jr. Oceanographer Teen Camp invites teens ages 13-16 to the join Long Beach Marine Institute on a week-long excursion, exploring local marine habitats and encountering a variety of incredible organisms. Discover various ecosystems along our coast and on Catalina Island while living onboard the Research Vessel Conqueror. Experience the day-to-day activities of a marine biologist while participating in research, scientific trials and dissections! This camp is a great introduction to the physical, chemical and biological aspects of marine science and will acquaint students with various methods of scientific research through hands-on activities and experiments. Campers will kayak, snorkel, hike, visit tide pools, collect specimens, and conduct research to learn about the marine environment and to determine the health of the surrounding waters. This expedition is a great opportunity to discover the amazing secrets of the ocean while meeting new friends and experiencing all that Southern California has to offer.

Tall Ship Summer Sailing
This unique summer program, which departs from Rainbow Harbor, is a live-aboard sailing camp that focuses on sail training, marine science and island exploration. It stimulates minds, encourages teamwork, develops self-esteem and it’s fun. For the entire voyage, campers are immersed in sail training, marines science and teamwork aboard Tole Mour, the largest sailing school vessel on the West Coast. During the trip, campers get instruction in sailing the ship as the professional crew gradually turns over the responsibility of running the ship to the trainees. Instructors also guide the campers through marine science lessons on various topics and water activities, including snorkeling and diving in kelp forests, boogie boarding at remote beaches and kayaking in the most beautiful locations in the Channel Islands. Activities like climbing aloft, steering, standing watch and cleaning the shop are integral parts of the voyage and help campers challenge themselves while building a sense of responsibility for their new floating home. There is also plenty of pure summer camp fun, allowing campers to be themselves while making new friends in a creative environment.
