Verizon’s Mike Murray is Guest Speaker for Youth Empowerment Workshop

Michael (Mike) Murry, volunteer and community service advocate, will be the guest speaker at the Sixth District Youth Empowerment Workshop on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Social Hall.

Murray has worked for Verizon in California for twenty-five years. He started in Operations as a departmental clerk and his most recent position is Director – Government & External Affairs for Long Beach and Southern California.

In 2003, he was awarded the Long Beach Chamber’s “Dewey Smith Award” for community service. In 2005, Murray received the Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent’s “Distinguished Community Service Award,” and the “President’s Distinguished Service Award” awarded by the President of Cal State Long Beach. He was awarded the Leadership Long Beach “Corporate Leader of the Year in 2008. In the 2009 he received the A Voice for Long Beach Children Award. Murray was the first recipient of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s Community Spirit Award in 2010.

Hosted by Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews and Speak Out! Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Program, this is the third class in a series of free workshops that focus on empowering local youth, ages 15 to 19, by assisting them in developing their communication skills and enhancing their self-confidence. The eight-week Communication and Leadership Program, instructed by Speak Out! Toastmasters, Jack Roberts, Saba McKinley, and Carma Spence, is designed to improve communication and leadership skills. The workshops help youth to overcome the fear and nervousness associated with public speaking.

The Sixth District Youth Empowerment Workshop Speak Out! Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Program takes place on Wednesday, May 18, at 4 p.m., at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Social Hall, 1950 Lemon Ave. in Long Beach.
