Mikk’s Kid Krusaders, a charity family team started by Lakewood residents Michael (eight years old) and his mom Heather, is working hard this fall to collect items for the soldiers overseas.
Working with Operation Gratitude, Doodlekins, and local businesses, the team hopes to collect travel sized items, handmade scarves, monetary donations, and more. The team hopes to work with local businesses to set up collection boxes throughout Lakewood and Long Beach.
There is a collection bucket at the Long Beach Depot For Creative Reuse, at 320 Elm Avenue in Long Beach. You can also send donations via postal mail, or arrange for pick-up in and around Long Beach.
On November 5, they will have a table and collection point set up for the First Fridays Long Beach event in front of Averyboo Arts (3908 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach). On November 6, 2010, they will have a booth at the Long Beach Veterans Day Fair at Houghton Park.
The wish list includes: knit hats, scarves, gloves, Beanie Babies, Webkinz, Trolls or other Small Plush Toys; Halloween Candy; white socks, energy bars, beef jerky; commercially sealed Lip Balm, toothpaste, toothbrushes, roll-on deodorant; computer flash drives, DVDs and CDs, Video Games; headsets (earpiece and microphone) and webcams; prepaid phone cards; Travel Size board games, novelty items, Yo-Yos, etc.; Bandana Coolers/Cool-Ties, Battery Operated Fans; Screenprinted T-shirts, Baseball Style Caps;
handmade knit or crochet scarves (5-7″ Wide, 45-50″ long); Hand-made Greeting Cards; written letters of appreciation.
They are raising funds by private donations, as well as fundraising. Heather is selling handmade items at BriannesBasics.com and items from Doodlekins, a Create Your Own Cartoon Family stationary line.
