Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach announced Monday that the hospital will be changing its name to Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach effective immediately. The decision to re-name the hospital was made in an effort to reflect the full level of care the hospital provides.
Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach offers a variety of programs for women, expectant mothers, children and young adults under one roof. Doctors at the hospital are equipped to treat a full array of complex medical issues for patients at any stage of their development, from pregnancy through adolescence, all in one location. In addition to providing specialized care for children, the hospital also offers exemplary perinatal care for expectant mothers.
“We offer a comprehensive level of care for women, children and the entire family,” says Suzie Reinsvold, chief operating officer, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach. “Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach has always provided superior care for expectant mothers and high-risk newborns alongside the quality treatment it has provided for children. It is important that our name accurately reflects who we are and the full service we provide to the entire family.”
The hospital welcomes more than 6,000 babies a year and serves as a destination center for high-risk pregnancies. Nearly 150 maternal transports are facilitated each year for expectant mothers at outlying hospitals. Through close monitoring, tests and ultrasounds, the high-risk pregnancy care team assists women experiencing complications during pregnancy. Some pregnancies require extended stays in the Perinatal Special Care Unit, where mothers with challenging pregnancies are cared for before they deliver. Programs also include a Fetal Diagnostic Center, where unborn babies can be monitored to ensure they are doing well prior to birth.
In the event complications arise, the hospital has a level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is just a few steps away from the newly remodeled delivery suites. The NICU cares for the most critically ill and premature babies. All of these features are in the same location alongside in-house Maternal/Fetal physician specialists at all times. This all-encompassing level of care for women makes the addition of “women” to the name of the hospital an important and necessary distinction.
With a maternity program and full-service children’s hospital together, families have access to pediatric experts in more than 30 specialties. In addition to obstetrics, physicians with specific training in pediatrics for cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology, and more are available to patients. This ensures the highest quality care for maternity and pediatric patients because both mom and baby get the specialized care they need.
