2013-01-16 · By Editor
On Monday, January 21 at several sites around the city, Long Beach residents can honor the life and principles supported by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a ‘Day of Service.’ In coordination with the Mayor’s Office, City of Long Beach Office of Sustainability, GreenLB and Leadership Long Beach, residents are able to volunteer their efforts toward their neighborhood and surrounding communities in service activities on the national holiday observing the life of Dr. King.
The ‘Day of Service’ activities include community tree planting in along the Wrigley Green Belt Park, clean-ups along the Long Beach Boulevard Corridor in North Long Beach, nature trail clean-up to help restore the DeForest Park Nature Trails in North Long Beach and tree well clean-ups of trash, weeds and debris along 7th Street in Downtown Long Beach. On Saturday, January 19, the normal monthly clean-up for the California Heights Neighborhood will be counted in conjunction with the Monday ‘Day of Service’ events. For more information on the service sites and schedules, volunteers can get more details at www.longbeach.gov/mayor/dayofservice. Depending on the service, supplies and work materials may be provided.
All are welcome to volunteer for the service activities and join the celebration as Long Beach residents honor the MLK, Jr. holiday by serving the community and celebrating the work of Dr. King. The volunteer efforts done throughout the city are some of the thousands of nationwide volunteer service activities as Americans serve their communities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These other nationwide projects include delivering meals, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, signing up mentors, reading to children, promoting nonviolence, and more.
