MLK Day of Service Activities Scheduled Throughout Long Beach

mlk-day-of-serviceOn Monday, January 21 at several sites around the city, Long Beach residents can honor the life and principles supported by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a ‘Day of Service.’ In coordination with the Mayor’s Office, City of Long Beach Office of Sustainability, GreenLB and Leadership Long Beach, residents are able to volunteer their efforts toward their neighborhood and surrounding communities in service activities on the national holiday observing the life of Dr. King.

The ‘Day of Service’ activities include community tree planting in along the Wrigley Green Belt Park, clean-ups along the Long Beach Boulevard Corridor in North Long Beach, nature trail clean-up to help restore the DeForest Park Nature Trails in North Long Beach and tree well clean-ups of trash, weeds and debris along 7th Street in Downtown Long Beach. On Saturday, January 19, the normal monthly clean-up for the California Heights Neighborhood will be counted in conjunction with the Monday ‘Day of Service’ events. Depending on the service, supplies and work materials may be provided.

All are welcome to volunteer for the service activities and join the celebration as Long Beach residents honor the MLK, Jr. holiday by serving the community and celebrating the work of Dr. King. The volunteer efforts done throughout the city are some of the thousands of nationwide volunteer service activities as Americans serve their communities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These other nationwide projects include delivering meals, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, signing up mentors, reading to children, promoting nonviolence, and more.

Service Event Details:

Mayor’s Office – Fruit Harvesting to Benefit Food Banks Volunteers needed to harvest fresh fruit from residential trees. The fruit will be provided healthy and fresh produce to food bank clients. WHEN: Monday, January 21, 9 a.m.- 11 a.m WHERE: West Long Beach area Volunteers: accommodates 10 volunteers (maximum). Due to limited capacity, you must call 562-570-6801 to sign up. MLK Day Project – Tree Well Clean-Up (1st District)

Volunteers needed to help clean tree wells along 7th Street in downtown Long Beach. Tree Wells accumulate trash, debris and weeds. Will clean-up an adjacent alley if time.

WHEN: MLK Day, January 21, 2013, 9 am – 12 pm (hope to finish in 1-2 hours) WHERE: 7th Street from Long Beach Blvd to Alamitos Avenue on both North & South, meet at the McDonald’s on 7th Street and Long Beach Blvd at 9am sharp to begin shortly after. Volunteers needed to help clean and beautify Long Beach Boulevard Corridor and Paseo parklet in North Long Beach

WHEN: MLK Day, January 21, 2013, 9 am – 12 pm WHERE: Clean-Up along Long Beach Blvd. Meet at Paseo located at 5368 Long Beach Blvd., just south of Market Street VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 20-30 TO BRING: Bags, gloves and refreshments will be provided. MLK Day Project – Nature Trail Clean-Up (9th District)

Volunteers needed to help clean and restore the DeForest Park Nature Trails in North Long Beach. Groups, families and friends are welcome! Students too…Students will be given community service hour credit.

WHEN: MLK Day, January 21, 2013, 9 am – 12 pm WHERE: Clean-Up along DeForest Park Nature Trails. Meet at DeForest Avenue and Osgood Street. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 100+ TO BRING: Water and snacks will be provided. We are asking volunteers to expect to get dirty and bring gloves if you can.
