On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a 50-year-old Long Beach woman died while in custody at the Long Beach City Jail.

The woman had been arrested and booked into the facility on a felony narcotics charge earlier in the day, and was placed into a holding cell.  While alone in the cell, she began to go into medical distress.  Long Beach Fire Department paramedics were summoned, while jail personnel, as well as on-duty medical personnel, began life-saving measures.  Paramedics arrived and continued life-saving efforts, however, the woman was pronounced deceased on site.

At this time, the subject is not being identified pending notification of next of kin. As with all in-custody death cases, the Long Beach Police Homicide Detail responded to conduct an investigation. In addition, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office is conducting an independent investigation to determine cause of death.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Scott Lasch and Donald Goodman at (562) 570-7244.
