Art, fashion, culture and vintage enthusiasts from around the globe will gather again at So-Cal’s premiere historic art deco destination, The Queen Mary, for the Inspiration 2012 Vintage, Fashion, Art & Kulture show, Friday-Saturday, February 10-11th, 2012. But the weekend’s fun will kick off a day early on the evening of Thursday, February 9th with an open-to-the-public preview party from 6-9pm at inretrospect [2122 E. 4th Street] in the heart of Long Beach’s 4th Street/“Retro Row” indie shopping district.

Eve is a Fecund Goddess: A Photographic Exhibition by D.W. Gastelum Opens at The Art Theater

Photographer D. W. Gastelum, also known as El Imagenero, has taken inspiration from the poem “Come Sweet Death,” written by B. Davie Napier and published in 1967. Napier has recently passed away, but was a theologian and educator for decades. In the poem he has used much of the “human history” set out in the biblical book of Genesis and put it in concrete terms. With respect to Eve, Napier has Adam complaining about the garden, about the lack of opportunity for growth in understanding and adventure . . . until he finds Eve. Then, he decides that the garden is “tolerably fair” after all, because “Eve is a fecund goddess.”

In the event you missed this weeks Red Hot Chili Peppers benefit gig at the Nokia Theatre (at a hefty $700 per ticket), perhaps the next best thing is seeing the band ‘live’ in the comfort of your neighborhood movie theatre next week! Coming to The Art Theatre Tuesday, August 30th is a simulcast via satellite of the band’s “I’m With You” concert LIVE from Hamburg, Germany. Performing their entire new album, “I’m With You”, in sequence, the RHCP’s will also showcase some of their greatest hits in this special high-definition cinematic in-theater event. This will be the first—and only—time the new album will be performed in its entirety by the band.

Watch This Book, a series of free outdoor film screenings celebrating family-friendly classics that are adaptations of beloved literary works! This month, by popular demand, we are proud to present the beloved 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz!

This month the event also welcomes singer/songwriter Alicia Murphy, who will perform original works from 4pm to 5pm, and Long Beach band MajicBulletTheory, who will complement a beautiful summer day with their eclectic mix of influences – including jazz, hip hop, and funk – from 5pm to 8pm. County Grant Funds Bike Friendly Business Districts in Long Beach

The nation’s first Bike-Friendly Business Districts were launched Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in Long Beach, to encourage merchants and customers to benefit from choosing bikes, not cars, for short trips.

The Bike-Friendly Business Districts operate under the premise that businesses are looking for ways to reach and retain customers, and customers are looking for ways to shop, dine, and run errands as conveniently and pleasurably as possible.

It’s been fun celebrating with our neighbors this summer on 4^th Street and surrounds—from the 4^th Street In Motion Bike Fest in May, to PARK(ing) Day this past September! We’ve a few more things up our proverbial sleeves for October: 4th Street Zombie Walk Presented by MondoCelluloid & 4th Street “Dia de Los Muertos“ Celebration!

The 3rd annual 4th Street Zombie Walk, slated for Sat., Oct. 30^th 5pm – Midnight, is shaping up to be a fabulous event with businesses from Junipero to Cherry hosting live music, ghoulish food & drinks, maniacal make-up stations, a zombie “Flash Mob” dance performance, and more! The Next LBOpera Cinema Event: The Love for the Three Oranges

Plan now to start your Halloween morning at the Art Theatre of Long Beach. On Sunday October 31, 2010 the Next LBOpera Cinema event The Love for the Three Oranges, by Sergei Prokofiev premiers at the Art Theatre.

This opera, premiered in Chicago in 1921, is a farce about a morose, hypochondriacal Prince in the land of the King of Clubs. His father tries to make him laugh with the help of the wizard, Tchelio, while Princess Clarice and the Prime Minister want him to die so they can take over the kingdom, and are aided by the witch, Fata Morgana. Commedia dell’arte figures help, hinder and comment. Morgana dooms the Prince to fall in love with three oranges; after confrontations with a huge cook, a rat, and a lovely princess, all eventually turns out well.

Robbery Suspect Sought; Police Request Public Assistance

On Monday, October 4, 2010 at approximately 3:46 p.m., a male entered a business located in the 2100 block of East 4th Street, and assaulted a 77- year- old female before robbing her. The suspect took cash and resumed the violent assault on the elderly victim, then exited the business. The suspect was last seen walking north on St. Louis Avenue.

The mission of PARK(ing) Day—conceived and created in 2005 by San Francisco art and design studio, Rebar—is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!

Out at the Movies Presents “HELLBENT.”

On October 28th Out at the Movies will present “HELLBENT.”

The night gets started with live entertainment by Todd Wheeler and a weekend giveaway from the Doubletree Hotel Doheny Beach at Dana Point.

Then Q&A with Los Angeles film maker Melissa Bouwman and her 3 minute short, What I Found in Great Aunt Nell’s Closet and a costume contest with prizes and finally the feature film Hellbent and lots of candy.
