There is no pleasant way to say this so I’ll just come right out and announce it: Long Beach Bikeway Route 10 has some problems. The first of these is the fact that one of its terminal points is at Loma and Ocean. This location was hard to get to and there seemed no obvious good reason to start or end here. This section of Ocean is a deadly narrow stretch for cyclists and should be avoided at all costs. So to start or end a ride here made no sense unless I lived at one of the handful of homes/apartments here on Loma. Also, if I had just finished my ride here and wanted to get to Bluff Park or the beach and the bike path below, there is no traffic light or crosswalk to allow me to cross this busy section of Ocean. More sense would have been Redondo one block up where there was a light and a flight of stairs to carry my bike down.

The morning will begin with a Cub Scouts Pancake Breakfast. The Market will also include a tomato plant sale, e-waste disposal, a used book sale as well as representation from the Belmont Heights Community Association.

Good Home Construction, a small general construction company that specializes in restoring and renovating historical and architecturally significant homes in Southern California, is honored to win a 2009 Chrysalis Regional Award for Best Bathroom Under $40,000, for its renovation of a 1920s-era cottage bungalow bathroom in Belmont Heights.

The original bathroom was only 35 sq. ft. and had fallen in disrepair over the years. The company was called in to expand the bathroom by 2 additional feet and to convert the bathtub to a full-standing shower with a shower seat. What was special about this renovation was that it managed to give the homeowners the feeling of spaciousness and modern conveniences they were looking for while retaining the period-appropriate vintage appeal of the 1920s.

The sharrows, the first of their kind west of Utah, are in the right traffic lane in each direction on Second Street from Livingston Drive to East Marina Drive. The street markings encourage the proper use of the lane by both motorists and cyclists, which by law already share the lane.

This is the first sign of WNV in Long Beach for 2009. Although no human cases have been reported so far this year in California, WNV activity has been detected in 12 California counties (including Los Angeles and Orange) in birds and mosquitoes. In 2008, 445 human cases, including 15 deaths, were reported in California.

On Sunday, June 7, Long Beach Heritage celebrates “A Century of Style” with its annual Great Homes of Long Beach tour. From noon to 5 p.m., ticket holders will be welcomed inside six architecturally distinguished homes in the Belmont Heights, Bixby Knolls, Los Cerritos and Willmore City neighborhoods of the city.
 
Homes featured on the tour this year span a century’s worth of the city’s rich architectural history, and include two Long Beach historic landmarks: the James Elzy Porter House, an impressive 1903 Queen Anne in the Willmore City Historic District built by pioneer surveyor, rancher and developer James Elzy Porter, and the Henry Clock House, a grand Monterey Revival home located in the Los Cerritos neighborhood and designed in 1933 by noted local architect Kirtland Cutter for prominent Long Beach attorney Henry Clock.
 
Other homes on the tour are landmarks in their own right. They include another turn-of-the-century home in the Willmore City Historic District, a 1904 Colonial Revival foursquare moved to the district earlier this decade and recently renovated by the Willmore City Heritage Association; a stunning Belmont Heights Romantic Revival house, circa 1930, with a rolled roof and turret features; a mid-century modern ranch house in Bixby Knolls that has been lovingly restored down to the 1950s-era furniture and decorations; and lastly, a special treat not to be missed: the 1930 Spanish Colonial Revival mansion, Vista Del Mar, on the bluff overlooking the ocean. Because this home is on a private gated street, parking may be hard to find, meaning guests might have farther to walk.
 
At each home, Long Beach Heritage docents will greet visitors and highlight the various interior and exterior features and any known history about the home.
 
Tickets are $35, or $30 for Long Beach Heritage members. Reservations are limited. Proceeds from the tour support the Bembridge House, a 1906 Queen Anne Victorian on the National Registry of Historic Places and owned by Long Beach Heritage. The home is being lovingly restored by the organization and serves as a cultural resource for Long Beach residents.
