Ride a Bike to Trader Joe’s for Free Home Delivery in Bixby Knolls

Pedaler Society uses a cargo bike to help cyclists bring groceries home safely.

Beginning January 28, 2012, and at no additional cost to the shopper, Pedaler Society will offer a grocery delivery service for residents residing within a one- mile radius of Trader Joe’s in Bixby Knolls. This service has been made possible by the Bike-Friendly Business District (BFBD) program in partnership with the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association. The BFBD program is made possible by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the City of Long Beach.

The couriers (or “Flyers” as they are called within Pedaler Society) will provide a courteous and efficient method to get your groceries home after riding your bike to Trader Joe’s. Customers will benefit from a healthy bike ride to and from Trader Joe’s and a great conversation with your “Flyer” on the way home!

February Marks 4th Year for Bixby Knolls Literary Society; Monthly Selection will Honor Black History

A discussion of Black Warriors: The Buffalo Soldiers of World War II, by Ivan J. Houston with Gordon Cohn, will honor Black History Month and highlight the fourth anniversary of the Bixby Knolls Literary Society when the group meets on Wednesday evening, February 8, 2012 at Expo Arts Center.

Houston, a vigorous 86 years of age, will discuss his experiences and respond to questions. The Buffalo Soldiers formed the only Negro infantry division to fight in Europe during World War II, when America’s military was racially segregated.

Volunteers Needed For Tree Planting in Bixby Knolls

On Sunday, January 8th 2012 The Camp Fire Bixby Knolls Association will be planting 16 Desert Willow trees along Atlantic Blvd. in coordination and support form with Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, the city of Long Beach and OSH Long Beach. Arborist, Jerry Rowland will guide us in planting the Desert Willows Sunday morning. The money raised at the cake auction was applied towards this Kiniya community project.

The UPS Store and Toys For Tots Book Drive Helps Deliver the Gift of Reading

The UPS Store located on Atlantic Ave. in Long Beach, CA, in conjunction with The UPS Store locations nationwide, is teaming up with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and Sony Pictures’ holiday movie, “Arthur Christmas,”to help deliver the gift of reading through a new book.

Throughout the holiday season, The UPS Store in the Bixby shopping center on Atlantic Ave. will sponsor a book drive in order to benefit Miller’s Children’s Hospital. From now through Dec. 16, participants may drop off new books for the patients at The UPS Store’s in-center drop off bin.

New Historical Exhibition, Rebuilding for the Future A New Deal for Long Beach 1933-1942

The Historical Society of Long Beach is proud to announce the opening of its next original exhibition, Rebuilding for the Future- A New Deal for Long Beach 1933-1942. Funded in part by a grant from the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association, it features photographs by J. Christopher Launi, along with archival prints and historic ephemera. Exhibition Opening is Friday, June 17, 2011 at the Historical Society of Long Beach.

The exciting new exhibition features 57 photographs of little known as well as iconic projects funded by the federal government between 1933 and 1942. Most of the pieces are striking photographs taken by Launi of murals, mosaics, and architectural details featured in Long Beach. The exhibition accentuates the importance of federally funded projects—creating an uptick in the local economy, employing people, building infrastructure, and enriching people’s lives through art and cultural programs. Rebuilding for the Future includes lesser known projects as well as works of art that people pass by everyday. Four public programs will be held to discuss aspects of the New Deal on Long Beach.

The nation’s first Bike-Friendly Business Districts were launched Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in Long Beach, to encourage merchants and customers to benefit from choosing bikes, not cars, for short trips.

The Bike-Friendly Business Districts operate under the premise that businesses are looking for ways to reach and retain customers, and customers are looking for ways to shop, dine, and run errands as conveniently and pleasurably as possible.

New Freeway Signage Helps Motorist Locate Bixby Knolls

What started as a line item on a “wish list” 10 years ago finally has come to fruition. Bixby Knolls is now officially on the map with directional signs on the 405 freeway. “There are now nine signs directing people north on Atlantic and Long Beach Blvd. into our business district.” said Blair Cohn , Executive Director of the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association. “This was a long time coming but we are thrilled to see that drivers will now know where Bixby Knolls is located. We have received many phone calls and emails from area residents about how happy they are to ‘finally be recognized.’”

FreeSpirit Yoga, is hosting their annual Blood Drive on Tuesday May 10, 2011. Only 38% of Americans are eligible to donate blood and of those only 8% do. That amounts to only about 3 out of every 100. Donating blood is a simple thing to do, but can make a big difference in the lives of others.
