To encourage community members to bike to the Third Annual Cambodian Arts & Culture Exhibition, the city’s Bike-Friendly Business District program has partnered with Cali Bike Tours to offer a free community ride from Retro Row to the festival.

Unveiling of “Cambodia Town Cultural District” Sign Set For July 16th

At 10 a.m. on July 16, 2011, Long Beach Councilmember Dee Andrews and Cambodia Town, Inc. will host the unveiling of the first street sign designating the “Cambodia Town Cultural District” at 602 E. Anaheim Street, at Atlantic Avenue. The program will include traditional Cambodian practices such as blessings by Buddhist monks, a special ceremonial dance, remarks by Councilmember Dee Andrews and key Cambodia Town Board officers, which includes a plaque presentation to the designation sign sponsors.

County Grant Funds Bike Friendly Business Districts in Long Beach

The nation’s first Bike-Friendly Business Districts were launched Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in Long Beach, to encourage merchants and customers to benefit from choosing bikes, not cars, for short trips.

The Bike-Friendly Business Districts operate under the premise that businesses are looking for ways to reach and retain customers, and customers are looking for ways to shop, dine, and run errands as conveniently and pleasurably as possible.

Youth Invited to Continue The Dialogue with Police Officers

A Long Beach Police and youth dialogue will continue today, Wednesday, March 16, 2011 and on Monday, March 21, 2011 at the United Cambodian Community (UCC).

The dialogue is an effort to develop and promote awareness and understanding between Long Beach youth ages 12 to 18 and police officers. Youth are encouraged to attend both nights.

The dialogue provides a unique opportunity for young people and law enforcement officers to engage in productive dialogue about perceptions and expectations of each other while exploring ways to improve police-community relations. A series of dialogues will be offered throughout the city over the next nine months, sponsored by the City of Long Beach, Long Beach GRIP (Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention) Project, California Conference on Equality and Justice, and Long Beach Police.

Councilman Dee Andrews and Cambodia Town to Host 2nd Annual Cambodian Arts & Culture Exhibition

The Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews and Cambodian Town to host the 2nd Annual Cambodian Arts and Culture Exhibition, Saturday, November 20, 2010 at MacArthur Park.

This is the second year that the open-air festival will have hands-on demonstrations of a variety of art forms from Cambodia’s rich and ancient culture. Local Cambodian artisans and culture bearers will share their expertise through interactive demonstrations. “This event is a jewel in our city. It reaches beyond the barriers to bring residents together to celebrate and educate with the beauty of art”, said Councilman Dee Andrews.

Long Beach residents are invited to meet newly elected City Prosecutor Doug Haubert today, August 17, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library Community Room, 1401 E. Anaheim St.

Mr. Haubert will give an overview of the City Prosecutor’s Office and how it handles cases. The presentation, part of the Anaheim Street Community Police Center’s monthly meeting, will give an opportunity for residents, community leaders and business owners to exchange information and speak directly with Mr. Haubert.

Public invited to workshop to learn how 911 calls are dispatched

Residents who want to learn how the Long Beach Police Department dispatches 911 calls are invited to a free workshop on Tuesday, June 15, from 5:00 – 6:30 pm at the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library Community Room, 1401 E. Anaheim St.

Rich Funke from the City of Long Beach 911 Communication Center will give a presentation on the Communication System procedures, including:

How the Long Beach Police Department prioritizes and dispatches 911 calls.
How to communicate with dispatchers in order to have an effective police response.
Why dispatchers ask the questions they do.

Anaheim Street Community Police Center Hosts ‘Domestic Violence’ Workshop on Tuesday, April 20

The Anaheim Street Community Police Center invites Long Beach residents to learn about domestic violence at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 20, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library Community Room, 1401 E. Anaheim St.

Domestic violence is not just a “private problem;” nearly one in four families, including children, partners, spouses, and seniors, are affected by domestic violence in some way, according to the California Attorney General’s Office.

Detective Fred Bloh, Ret. Long Beach Police Department, will explain the procedures for reporting domestic violence, filing a crime report, and how to obtain and enforce restraining orders.

Historical Society, Cal State professors to document Cambodian History in Long Beach

The Board of Directors of Long Beach Community Foundation (LBCF) has named the Historical Society of Long Beach as the recipient of their annual strategic grant. The LBCF strategic focus for 2009 addresses the preservation of the Cambodian community’s rich history in Long Beach by awarding this $40,000 grant.

The Historical Society of Long Beach (HSLB) is collaborating with two professors from CSU Long Beach and CSU Dominguez Hills on the Cambodian Community History and Archive Project (CamCHAP) to create an archive of historical photographs and documents related to the Cambodian community in Long Beach.

1st Annual Cambodian Mixer

Honorable Councilman Dee Andrews, Councilman Patrick O’Donnell, and Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal are hosting a Cambodian Mixer on tonight, April 2, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Ernest S. McBride Sr. Park, gymnasium, 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. The purpose of the mixer is to focus on the Cambodian community and introduce them to a variety of agencies that provide free services.

With an estimated 60,000 Cambodians in Long Beach, the issues that this community faces have many complex layers. One of the barriers to crucial services, other than language, is an overwhelming level of suspicion about government. Most of the Cambodian population in Long Beach fled the Khmer Rouge, a period that saw the death of approximately 2 million Cambodians through the combined result of political executions , starvation , and forced labor, and it is understandable why they may be apprehensive engaging in city services and agencies.

All residents are encouraged to attend the mixer to learn about various community agencies that can assist them and their neighborhood. “In difficult times, it is important to know what resources are available to help prepare for any possible obstacles. More over, Long Beach has great community pride and we look out for one another. Although we face challenging times, together we shall overcome them”, said Councilman Andrews.

“This is a great opportunity for members of the community to meet City staff and discover new resources”, Councilmember Patrick O’Donnell said. Agencies throughout the city will be in attendance to explain their services and answer any questions. “This event should be a wonderful opportunity for the Cambodian community to become more aware of information and assistance they may not have known was available to them”, said Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal.

Among the over 20 service oriented agencies participating, attendee’s will have a chance to learn about employment opportunities, immigration assistance, housing, and clinical services. There will be information offered from family enrichment to business support. The City of Long Beach, Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network, and the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles are sponsoring this free event.
