First-time Buyer Grateful for a Home to Call Her Own

First-time Homeowner Linda Kelley says the location of the Coronado Community was a big selling point.

First-time homeowner Linda Kelley had never owned a home and says that her new Coronado townhome is far beyond what she dreamed possible. When you talk to her about her home, you feel her joy and excitement.

Kelley knew she would one day be a homeowner; it was just a matter of finding something she could afford. As a single woman working in South Central Los Angeles as an X-Ray technician, it was difficult to find a home she could qualify for on her income alone, but she stayed optimistic and persistent. She didn’t expect a fortress; just something she could call her own.

Kelley recalls looking at the houses in Signal Hill while walking with friends and wondering, “What do I have to do to afford a home like that?” She never expected to be the owner of a beautiful, brand new townhome in the city she really desired to live in—Long Beach.

Then, she found Coronado.

Coronado Hosts Open (Town) House and Pancake Breakfast

The townhouses at Coronado are located in the heart of the Atlantic Corridor between 21st and Hill streets.

Construction set to begin on Mcbride Park Teen Center; groundbreaking August 7

The office of Councilman Dee Andrews in cooperation with the Departments of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Public Works, Community Development, and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency invites the public to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Teen Center at McBride Park, 1550 Martin Luther King Avenue on Saturday, August 7 at 11 a.m .

The McBride Park Teen Center Project will include a new 5,275 sq ft teen center, and new parking lot and skate park. An additional .15 acres of park space will be added along the 16th Street side of the park.

The Teen Center building will include a multi-purpose room, kitchen, game room, lounge, study room and computer room. Construction will begin in July 2010 and is scheduled to be open to the public in summer 2011.

New Generations Celebrates Second Annual “Gift”

Neighbors and families attended the second annual “The Gift,” an event hosted by non-profit New Generations NG of Long Beach on January 9. The Washington Middle School soccer field at 1450 Cedar Avenue in Long Beach transformed into a carnival of fun from noon to 3 p.m. where families can play games, watch performances and even get a mini-makeover with free haircuts and manicures.

Visitors enjoyed dozens of activity booths while participating in jalapeño eating contests and winning free prizes. The Long Beach Fire Association Local #372 partnered with New Generations NG served free hot dogs at the event. For the younger children a free photo shoot was set up and free books were given away.

Smoking may be cause of fatal apartment fire on Elm Avenue

At 11:30 p.m. January 7, 2010, units from the Long Beach Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1100 Elm Avenue. Engine 3 arrived on scene within a matter of minutes and found a first floor apartment fully involved in fire with fire extending to an adjacent unit.

The fire inside the involved apartment was so intense that flames reached the third floor landing. The elderly female resident of the involved apartment was found lying in the courtyard near a planter with severe burns to her body. Sadly she succumbed to her injuries and was deceased upon initial crews’ arrival. Witnesses reported she walked from the apartment under her own power prior to collapsing in the courtyard.

Connected Corridor Phase Three grant process — Deadline for applications extended

The Connected Corridor Vision: Create a “Blueprint for the Future” for implementation on other Long Beach corridors

The Connected Corridor team has announced the availability of grants to community groups that are able to produce greater collaboration, community empowerment and civic engagement in the Phase Three area. Grant applications were made available online on November 20, 2009 at www.connectedcorridor.org.

The deadline for submitting grant applications has been extended until Monday, December 21.
