Health Department Receives $1 Million Kaiser Permanente Grant to Improve Health in North Long Beach

Healthy choices will be easier in North Long Beach due to a Kaiser Permanente’s $1 million 3-year investment in Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL). The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) received this grant from Kaiser Permanente to promote the public’s health in targeted areas of North Long Beach. The Health Department has been granted the funds as the coordinating agency of the Coalition for a Healthy North Long Beach, an alliance of community groups focused on improving health for all residents in North Long Beach.

The Department of Library Services and Long Beach Development Services will host the second Community Discussion on Site Planning and Design of the North Library on Saturday, May 7. The discussion will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the North Neighborhood Library, 5571 Orange Ave.

The new North Branch Library and Community Center is planned for construction on the 5800 block of Atlantic Avenue, in the heart of the North Village Center. Measuring approximately 24,000 square feet in size, the LEED Gold facility will complement the City of Long Beach’s drive for sustainability and stand as an attractive, state of the art center of community pride.

Paramount Blvd. Project to Begin as Citywide Street Repair Work Continues

The unprecedented street repair work that has improved the condition of major streets in Long Beach will continue with a project to rehabilitate Paramount Boulevard from Candlewood Street to Artesia Boulevard.

The Long Beach City Council approved the contracts earlier this month, and construction is expected to start in May and be completed by September. This $2 million project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Federal Highway Administration Demonstration Funds secured by Representative Linda Sanchez, and Proposition 42 gasoline sales tax revenue. There is no impact to the General Fund.

Community Input Encouraged on North Long Beach Restaurant Project

The City has developed a vision for North Long Beach that includes the transformation of the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Artesia Boulevard into an important commercial gateway. To further this vision, The Long Beach Redevelopment Agency assembled a 2.2 acre site located at the northeast corner of Atlantic Avenue and Artesia Boulevard for the development of a full-service, sit-down restaurant, as preferred by the community.

On Saturday, March 5, Councilmember Steven Neal, 9th District and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency, together with Primestor Development, Inc. will host a community discussion on the site planning and design of a full-service restaurant. The discussion will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Jordan High School Cafeteria, 6500 Atlantic Avenue. Free parking is available in the Jordan High School staff parking lot off of Atlantic Avenue. Light breakfast will be served.

“This is an opportunity for residents to provide input on the selection and design of their new neighborhood restaurant,” said Councilmember Steven Neal. “With improvement projects of all types and sizes being planned and implemented in North Long Beach, we are making sure everyone plays a part in shaping this corridor to help stimulate economic development and build a more vibrant neighborhood for all of us.”

Close to $5.5 million in extensive streetscape and façade improvements have taken place along Atlantic Avenue and just south of site is the North Village Center, a mixed-used development that will include a new state-of-the-art public library and community center.

The City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program, LBGRIP Project, the California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ), and the Long Beach Police Department are hosting a 3-day Police & Youth Dialogue February 16, 18 & 23, 2011 at the North Long Beach Community Center (formerly PAL Center).

Youth ages 12-18 or grades 7th-12th in the North Long Beach Area who are interested in coming together in a safe environment to engage in conversations around issues with police officers are encouraged to attend. Participants must be able to attend all 3 evenings.

Two Thanksgiving Day Blazes Keep LB Firefighters Busy

At 5:45 a.m. early Thanksgiving morning, Long Beach Fire units were called to 264 Covina Avenue where fire crew members found thick smoke and fire pouring out of the second story window of a four-plex. Heavy black smoke was also seen rapidly coming out of the attic vents throughout the roof.

Once the fire was extinguished in the kitchen, efforts then turned to the attic area above. While ventilating the structure, the roof deck collapsed causing a firefighter to fall into the attic space below. The firefighter was quickly rescued and, fortunately, without injury.

A primary search located two cats that were overcome by smoke inhalation. Even with the use of specialized animal masks, resuscitation efforts were not successful.

The resident of the burned unit was not home at the time of the fire. An elderly female in an adjacent unit was examined by paramedics and did not require hospitalization.

The LBFD Arson Units are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of this blaze. Nineteen fire personnel worked at the scene with assistance from units from the Long Beach Gas Department, Animal Control, and Southern California Edison. The fire occurred in the 3rd Council District.

North Long Beach Fire Displaces 5 Residents

On Thanksgiving Day at around 6:00 pm, units from the Long Beach Fire Department responded to a house fire at 2408 E. 64th Street. The blaze was called into LBFD by a passerby, who stated that they could see lots of smoke coming out of the home.

Within minutes, Engine 12 arrived on scene and saw heavy black smoke coming from the two-story house. Firefighters quickly charged their hose-line and forced entry through the front door. Because of an aggressive interior attack they quickly located the seat of the fire and extinguished the blaze before further damage could take place.

Fortunately, the occupants weren’t home when the fire ignited and no one was injured. However, five people were displaced from their home until repairs can be made.

Twenty-one fire department personnel were on the scene of 9th District fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

LBPD North Division Plans DUI Checkpoint for Saturday

In an effort to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

The Long Beach Police Department will be conducting a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday, November 13, from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. in the North Division.

All too often, members of the community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Driver License Checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as to ensure drivers have a valid driver license.

Veterans Day Parade and Festival in Houghton Park

Long Beach will celebrate Veterans Day on Saturday, November 6, with a trio of events in Houghton Park:

the 14th Annual Long Beach Veterans Day Parade

followed by The Freedom Walk

and the Veterans Day Festival with Craft and Vendors Fair

The Veterans Day Parade will head south down Atlantic Avenue at 10:00 a.m., led by 2010 Grand Marshals Clarence Bramley and “Rosie the Riveter.” Bramly is a World War II Veteran and Survivor of Bataan Death March. Rosies, many of whom lived in Long Beach and worked at local manufacturing plants, are being honored this year as a patriotic symbol and inspiring icon for women during World War II.

The popular parade, featuring military vehicles, ROTC groups, equestrians, drill teams and marching bands continues down Atlantic Avenue from Harding Street to 56th, where it makes a U turn and return again to the step off point at Houghton Park.

710 at the 91 Freeways: Big Rig Narrowly Avoids Plunging From A Freeway Overpass

When firefighters arrived, they found the big rig dangling precariously on the edge of the overpass.

At 9:20 Thursday morning, the Long Beach Fire Department was dispatched to accident reports of an overturned big rig on the transition road between the eastbound 91 to the southbound 710 freeways.

When fire personnel arrived on the scene, they found a tractor-trailer perched precariously on top of a guardrail. The trailer portion of the truck had already fallen, sending it crashing to the freeway on ramp nearly 40 feet below. The tractor portion dangled on the mangled railing.

Local, sustainable and under the stars! The Long Beach Farm Dinner on October 23 is a rare chance to dine al fresco in an urban garden, and a smart way for garden organizers to raise money for The Growing Experience in Carmelitos.

Local chefs will prepare a five-course meal for the Long Beach Farm Dinner that showcases seasonal flavors and ingredients harvested fresh from the urban farm.
