Have you gone to see one of the Long Beach Christmas parades this year? The colorful lights and cheery crowds are always a wonderful way to get into the spirit of the holidays. When I really need a boost of Christmas spirit—say after 10 hours fighting crowds in the mall—there’s one activity guaranteed to make me feel festive again. Going to look at lights!

Now that Long Beach has a slight chill in the air, it’s the perfect time to go look at Christmas lights.

Whether you prefer to stroll the streets and get an up close view or drive the decorated avenues listening to a custom playlist of cheery tunes, there are several places to take in the awesome displays of holiday lights. Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance Will Collect Toys and Food at November Meeting

The next meeting of the Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance (WANA) will be Monday, November 21st, 7-9 p.m.at Veterans Park Social Hall, 101 East 28th Street in Long Beach.

The neighborhood meeting will begin with a Meet & Greet from 6:45 to 7:00 p.m. Come enjoy coffee, deserts and other refreshments provided by WANA Volunteers and chat with friends and neighbors.

Mix and mingle with the special guests and speakers Lenny Arkinstall, LB Connect TV and Felton Williams.

Daisy Avenue Christmas Tree Lane Parade lights up Wrigley

The Daisy Avenue Christmas Tree Lane Parade will march on December 10, 2011! The Christmas Tree Lane Parade begins at 5 p.m. and travels along Daisy Avenue from Hill Street to Pacific Coast Highway and returns.

And, don’t miss the annual holiday village set up in the grassy median as well. The display stays up all month for folks driving through Wrigley to enjoy while out scouting for lights.

Councilmember Johnson Invites Public to Wrigley Heights Dog Park Dedication Saturday, May 21st

The Office of 7th District Long Beach Councilmember James Johnson and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine invite the public to a grand opening event for the Wrigley Heights Dog Park on Saturday, May 21, at 11 am. The Wrigley Heights Dog Park is located at 3401 Golden Ave.

The 1.9-acre dog park at the northwest corner of Wardlow Road and Golden Avenue was the site of the former police horse stable and later became passive open space.

“The Wrigley and West Long Beach areas are desperate for increased access to open space for recreation,” said Councilmember James Johnson. “The Wrigley Heights Dog Park will be an example of how to maximize the usage of available open space to serve the community.”

Holiday Parade Signals Start of Entertainment Nights in Wrigley

On Saturday, December 11 at 5:00 p.m., join Councilmember James Johnson and The Daisy Avenue Parade and Program Committee for the 57th Annual Daisy Avenue Christmas Tree Lane Parade.

“The Daisy Avenue Parade is special in that it is the only holiday parade that runs down a residential street and not a commercial corridor,” councilmemeber Johnson said. ”This year, neighbors are coming together to re-energize the parade in order to continue its tradition of bringing outstanding entertainment to the Wrigley area and to Long Beach.”

Henderson Avenue Tree Planting and Wrigley Garden Mural Unveiling

Wrigley is Going Green, a grass roots neighborhood environmental organization devoted to saving and planting trees in Long Beach, was awarded a Neighborhood Partners Program grant to plant 60 trees in the area immediately surrounding the Wrigley Garden and create a mural by our very own local artist, Lisa Wibroe, to go in the thriving community garden. The trees will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood which has been seeing vast improvement since the Wrigley Garden, moved into the plot of land where two drug houses were torn down. Where once there was blight, now there is beauty.

On Monday, October 4, 2010 at Veterans Park, the Wrigley Association will host Christopher Garner, the Director of the Long Beach Gas & Oil Department and Michelle Quigley, Chief Operations Officer for the Long Beach animal care Services.

Residents of the Wrigley neighborhood are concerned about the safety of the gas lines in connection with the recent events in San Bruno, will have the opportunity to have their concerns addressed by Christopher Garner, of the Long Beach Gas & Oil Department.

Once again Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance (WANA) will host a National Night Out to Fight Crime Potluck at the mini-Park located between West 21st & Hill Streets west of San Francisco Avenue next to the LA River.

Public is welcome! Bring a neighbor, kids and a lantern! WANA will provide water, soft drinks, coffee, dessert, plates, napkins, and silverware.

Bring a salad, side dish, casserole or main dish to share. WANA will provide a grill and charcoal if you want to BBQ your own hamburgers.

Wrigley Neighborhood meeting presents Metro Blue Line audit

Review the findings from the Metro Blue Line Bike and Walk Audits conducted this past December at the upcoming Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance meeting.

The neighborhood organization will discuss the bike and walk audit findings from the stations in the Wrigley area on Monday, March 15 at the regular monthly WANA meeting at Veteran’s Park Social Room 101 E. 28th St. Atlantic Avenue.

7th District Council Candidates to square off in forum Monday.

On Monday, February 1, the Wrigley Association and California Heights Neighborhood Association will host a forum with candidates running for the Long Beach Seventh District City Council seat. The election will be held April 13, 2010.

There are 4 candidates vying for the 7th District Council seat: Jill Hill (www.jillhillforqualityneighborhoods.com), James Johnson (www.johnsonforcitycouncil.com), Jack Smith (www.justvotejack.org) and write-in candidate Tonia Reyes-Uranga (www.longbeach.gov/District7). All the candidates have been invited to attend. Alan Tolfkoff, long time leader at the Wrigley Association, will server as moderator at the forum.

Neighborhood meeting imagines Wrigley in 2030

A representative from the Long Beach Sustainability Commission will speak at the next Wrigley Association Meeting on Monday, January 25, at 7: 00 p.m. in Veteran’s Park Community Center, 101 East 28th Street, Long Beach.

The guest speaker will be Steve Gerhart from the Long Beach Planning Department. He will speak on Long Beach 2030: Imagine One Great Wrigley Community.

Also, Joan Greenwood will present a special report for Wrigley Heights on the response from the Environmental Health Investigations Branch of the California Department of Public Health regarding concerns to the Oil Operators property.

Parade and festival honor legacy of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr

The 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace & Unity Parade Celebration will take place on Saturday, January 16, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in Long Beach. This year, the parade’s theme is “Strength To Love” — taken for Dr. King’s (1963) book published under the same name.

“I chose this theme to bring attention to the contents and teachings that this publication expresses,” said 6th District Council member Dee Andrews. “Dr. King’s book calls for a return to love. Its teachings focus on loving your enemies and it invites the reader to dive into a wellspring of information that can assist you to become a greater person for all.”

Christmas Tree Lane holiday events plan for Santa and Snow

The Christmas Tree Lane parade may have already marched into the twilight, but the fun continues in this festive area of Wrigley with holiday events all month long.

Additional Daisy Avenue Entertainment Nights are planned for December 18-20 starting at 7:00 p.m. on the green at 20th Street and Daisy Avenue.

Holiday events bring cheer to Long Beach in December

The left-over turkey is put away and the holiday season is officially in full swing. The city will be filled with goodwill and holiday cheer everywhere you look. For those that like to stroll the streets looking at Christmas lights, there will be decorative lights downtown and uptown, along with Christmas trees and holiday parades, and shopping events with Santa.

Long Beach has a month-long celebration planned for December. The holiday events start the first weekend in December and continue through the season — not to mention all the Long Beach Christmas parades!

Plant Sale at The Wrigley Garden next Saturday

On Saturday, August 1, 2009, Long Beach Organic, Inc. in collaboration with private property owner and local business woman (SISco Business Services Inc.), Annette LaBarca, City of Long Beach’s Neighborhood Leadership Program team – Waves4Change; Wrigley Association and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency invite you to break ground on the Wrigley Village Community Garden.

The Wrigley Village Community Garden will be located at 2044 Pacific Avenue in the heart of the Pacific Corridor. This grass roots celebration will complement the City of Long Beach’s own extensive redevelopment efforts to improve Pacific Avenue through the Wrigley Village Streetscape Project.

Wrigley Community Garden takes root on Henderson Avenue

A fresh new community garden spanning two city lots now blossoms at the site of a former drug house. Wrigley is Going Green (WiGG) and Council member Dee Andrews have secured the use of 1950-1960 Henderson Avenue for use as a temporary space for the Wrigley Community Garden.

Volunteers turned out last Saturday to prep the land and get ready for the first season of gardeners. Thanks to mulch from the Long Beach Mulch-a-Lot program and the group of hard working residents, the empty land was transformed into 39 ready-to-plant plots.

Wrigley River Run Takes Off Saturday, June 6

Run a flat, fast course through Wrigley Village and along the L.A. River bike path in the Long Beach Neighboorhood Foundation’s 2nd Annual Wrigley River Run 5K/10K and Tadpole Trot on Saturday June 6, 2009.

Last year’s Wrigley River Run was the focus of most of LBNF’s energies for 2008. The event drew many runners of all ages and backgrounds. The Long Beach business community also supported the River Run, with race sponsors including Buono’s Pizzeria, Road Runner Sports, and many others.
