downtown long beach new city farmMayor Bob Foster will join Councilmember Robert Garcia to kick-off tomorrow’s Build Day for the New City Farm at 225 East 15th Street, just off Long Beach Blvd.

Community volunteers, local dignitaries, parents, students, teachers and staff of the New City School will be spending the day constructing the urban farm.

The New City Farm Build Day kicks off with a ceremony and speeches at 9am.

“I am extremely proud of this project, the community and New City School,” said Garcia. “This farm will enhance the neighborhood, and encourage healthy eating and living.”

The organic farm will be operated by a professional farmer, students, parents and staff. The New City Farm will also offer opportunities for members of the community to participate in sustainable agriculture.  The City’s Long Beach Housing Development Company will lease the lot, vacant for more than 10 years, to the New City School.

The quarter-acre site will include fruit trees, vegetable gardens, a windmill for power, and, eventually, some animals. The garden will help children learn about farming, nutrition, environmental biology, and conservation.

Partners in the New City Farm project include the City of Long Beach, the Port of Long Beach, Home Depot, Conservation Corps of LB, We Love Long Beach, Revolution Foods, Matson Navigation, Evergreen Shipping, Studio One Eleven, H&H Nursery, Tree People, LB Water Department, At Last Cafe, and more.
