North Long Beach Community Garden will take registrations at work party

The joint efforts of Val Lerch’s 9th District Office, Long Beach Organic and the Grant Neighborhood Association has grown into something beautiful for the residents of North Long Beach — a new community garden. The garden team will host a work party and barbeque this Saturday, March 27 to christen the new space.
The community garden will begin to take shape when volunteers and future gardeners with the help of CSULB students, spend the morning removing trash, moving stones, and digging trenches for irrigation pipes. At noon garden volunteers will enjoy a buffet lunch LBO-style.
Gardeners will also have the opportunity to register for the spring and summer season.
The community garden will host more than 40 individual plots, giving as many families an opportunity to grow healthy organic produce in an urban environment. It will also eventually feature a small orchard, a grape arbor, a pond and butterfly habitat, and a demonstration garden to grow food for charity.
Volunteer at the community garden and mingle with like-minded urban farmers on Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at 2813 South Street (east of Paramount).
