OLLI members will showcase are in a variety of mediums including watercolor, pastels, photography and carvings.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) will hold its seventh annual Juried Arts and Crafts Show from Monday, Feb. 20, through Friday, Feb. 24, in the campus’ Duncan Anderson Gallery of the Design Building (DESN).

The show will feature art work created by OLLI members in mediums ranging from oil, acrylics, watercolor and pastels to photography, needlework, papier-maché and carvings.  This year, CSULB Design Department professors are invited to submit an individual piece of art for display.

The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily and is free to all current OLLI members as well as CSULB students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Following the art show, a reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m., and is open to all current and past CSULB family and friends.  As part of the reception, various OLLI classes will demonstrate activities such as music, chorus and readings.

“The art show is a chance for seniors to display their work in a gallery,” said Betty Hutchens, director of the OLLI art exhibit.  “How many amateurs get that chance?  It is a fun thing that we enjoy, and a lot of the OLLI student body does, too.  The Sunday afternoon reception and program is a nice social time for OLLI members and friends as well.  They mingle and visit as they look at the art and then sit back for an entertainment program put on by their friends.”

“This year, on Friday, Feb. 24, the exhibit will also be included as part of a tour of our OLLI facility,” added Barbara White, OLLI’s executive director.  “This will be part of the celebration of our OLLI receiving a second endowment gift from the Osher Foundation to support the goal of lifelong learning at CSULB.”

OLLI members who wish to enter their artwork in the show must submit their application and artwork by Friday, Feb. 17. All paint and photo entries must be framed and ready to hang. Free-standing arts and crafts are also accepted for consideration. Submission applications can be obtained from the OLLI office.

  1. veta banks says:

I was excited when I came across this info, but then realized I was both too late and not a student.
I am an active senior whose passion is photography.
After an illness, I retired from teaching, after 33 years in the profession. I really want to further my passion through skill development and juries exhibits. I have been encouraged by the many comments and interests in my work. I was gratified to have been invited to display at the Long Beach Sr Center the past two years. I’d like to be a participant in your program.

  2. Yes, you must be an OLLI but it is easy to join us at CSULB. New classes will be forming. The Info will be available on the web site: http://www.csulb.edu/centers/olli on March 9 and the catalogue on March 12 in the office.
