Hire a Youth

The Pacific Gateway’s goal is to place youth in summer  jobs and internships through the Hire-A-Youth program in Long Beach.

The Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network kicked off its summer Youth Jobs Program. Each year, the program provides hundreds of youth in Long Beach and Signal Hill with valuable work experience, and also provides businesses with eager, job-ready workers. The program was launched at a ceremony thanking businesses for their support and encouraging them to continue their involvement in the program.

“The Youth Jobs Program guides qualified young people into the workforce,” Mayor Bob Foster said. “Our local businesses benefit, the economy benefits, and the community benefits. That’s why we’re asking employers to help us provide opportunities for these hardworking youth and hire them for the summer or serve as an internship mentor.”

This year’s program includes resources to help businesses hire a youth employee at no cost to them. Pacific Gateway will provide an average of 100 hours of paid work experience at $9.00 an hour.

“The Youth Jobs Program helps equip today’s youth with the skills they need for the workplace,” said Vivian Shimoyama, Chair, Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Board. “The paid work experience is an opportunity to use these skills, and support local businesses.”

A key component of the program is the completion of Personal Enrichment Training, which provides up to 20 hours of paid training to the youth in the following categories: financial literacy; work ethic; career exploration; and life skills.

Pacific Gateway’s goal is to place 500 youth this summer in jobs.
