On December 3, 2010, detectives from the Long Beach Police Department arrested Jennifer Garcia, a 26-year-old resident of Long Beach, for the 2006 murder of a 2-year-old male. Suspect Garcia was the girlfriend of the childs father as well as the childs babysitter.
On November 16, 2006, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Long Beach Fire Department paramedics were called to an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Lakewood Boulevard in response to a call that a child had fallen down a flight of stairs. The child was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, placed on life support, and LBPD’s Child Abuse Detail conducted a preliminary investigation.
After the child’s condition deteriorated, the decision was made to remove him from life support, and on November 17, 2006, the victim was pronounced deceased. Homicide Detectives Malcolm Evans and Scott Lasch responded to the hospital to conduct an investigation as is standard in all infant deaths. This led to an extensive investigation by the detectives that included assistance from a panel of experts representing multiple agencies and overseen by the Los Angeles County Coroners Office.
With a warrant for her arrest, Long Beach Police detectives took the suspect into custody the morning of December 3, 2010, in the city of Stanton. Deputy District Attorney Edwin Wakabayashi of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Family Violence Division is currently handling the case.
