The Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch and Native Gardens is a cultural treasure that serves as a living snapshot of Californian life dating back more than one hundred years.

Although the area on which Rancho Los Alamitos is situated has been inhabited for some 1,500 years, the current ranch house dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Built on the foundations of an earlier adobe structure, the ranch house was owned by various members of the Bixby family from 1881 through 1967, and it was during this period that the ranch was developed into the imposing and elegant structure that is seen today. The early 20th century also saw Florence Green Bixby design, layout and plant the ranch’s beautiful garden areas.

During their tour of the ranch house, visitors will be introduced to such opulent areas as the Billiards Room, the Library and the Music Room, and should take time to appreciate the rooms’ luxurious trimmings including their stately redwood and oak mantels. Guided tours of the ranch house are available, and these come highly recommended as they will give the visitor valuable history of the ranch house’s construction, decoration and renovation. No better example of an adobe ranch house exists in the area, and this wonderful family home is well worth a visit.

Florence Bixby personally designed her gardens, and her restrained and elegant personality shines through in the construction of such enchanting sites as the walled Secret Garden, the Jacaranda Walk which abuts the old-style tennis court and the Friendly Garden with its neatly bricked walkways. All of the gardens, including the luxuriantly green Native Garden, have recently been renovated and still feature the original species as cultivated by Mrs Bixby.

The ranch and gardens complex also invites visitors to take part in various cultural events, including book signings, art exhibitions and outdoor choral performances. Children are also welcomed and would especially enjoy visiting the barnyard animals and going on horse- or cart-rides through the enchanting ranch grounds.

The Los Alamitos Historic Ranch and Native Garden complex is open every Wednesday through Sunday, 1pm to 5pm, and admission is free.
