Rancho Los Cerritos Seeking Volunteers

The rancho will host several events for prospective volunteers this fall.

Volunteer Open Houses — 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7; 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10. Learn about volunteer opportunities at the historic home and grounds, including greeting visitors, giving tours, or helping behind the scenes. Time commitments range from a few hours per month to a few times per year. RSVP for either of the volunteer open house at (562) 206-2040.

School Docent Training — 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 14-Nov. 2.
This eight-week training prepares volunteers to share history with children. Adobe Days Revisited, our award-winning school program for local fourth-graders, supplements the state history curriculum. Docents will learn about the people who lived and worked at the Rancho in the 1800s and will help students step back in time with first-person accounts from the period.

House Docent Training — 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 1-Nov. 19.
This eight-week training covers California and Rancho history through the 1940s, as well as adobe architecture, decorative arts, textiles, and interpretation techniques. Learn about the people who lived and worked at the Rancho and how they contributed to the growth of Southern California, so you can lead public tours of the house.

“Volunteering is a great way to learn more about Long Beach history, while making lifelong friends,” said Education Director Meighan Maguire. “Many of our volunteers have been with us for years, and have truly become part of the Rancho Los Cerritos family. Others are brand new here, bringing lots of excitement to this lovely place.”

Both Meighan Maguire and longtime docent Kim Bemowski are available for interviews. Please contact Meighan at 562-206-2043, or Kim at 562-938-9779.
