Rascals Teriyaki Grill: More Than Teriyaki

The beef and chicken bowls at Rascals Teriyaki grill are great, but I keep coming back for the chicken salad.

It’s summer. It’s hot outside, you are busy running from one event to another! Every weekend is packed with stuff to do, and if you are like me, you aren’t cooking. Not that I have ever been the biggest chef, but it’s too hot to slave over a stove first of all, and secondly, I just don’t have the time. There are concerts in the park, parades, fairs and vacations that get in the way.

It is weather like this that makes me return to an old standby that never fails. Rascals Teriyaki grill has several local locations, mostly in the South Bay, but I frequent the Bellflower location now that I am a Long Beachian (is that the proper term?).

What you should know about Rascals: The teriyaki beef and chicken bowls are great, everything comes with a big scoop of white rice, and the food is pretty simple. But what makes Rascals a place I return to again and again is their Chinese Chicken Salad. I always get the same thing, the Teri Deluxe with the beef teriyaki, and the salad.

Rascals Teriyaki Grill

The salad at Rascals Teriyaki Grill is not complex, but it is magnificent.

It isn’t a complex salad and involves chopped iceberg lettuce, almond slices, wontons, white meat chicken and Asian vinaigrette. For some reason, when all of this comes together….it’s magnificent.

The dressing is not overbearing, oily or cloying like some Chinese sauces can be, the chicken is shredded and is premium white meat. I can’t believe I am saying this, but it is astounding to me mostly, because it is REAL chicken, not the stuff that has been processed or comes from a boneless breast.

This salad could be a staple in my diet, if I had the money and the means to eat it weekly. The teriyaki beef is also good, with a sweet flavor and the sauce is thick, but it isn’t that canned junk that you get at subpar teriyaki joints.

There are other items on the menu, like gravy and curry bowls. But I have never had the inclination to order anything but this. Even the white rice is done right.

On top of this, my service has always been impeccable and the people that work there always seem like local kids or families. To top it off, Rascal’s is always full of families and police officers, so you know it has to be great!

Rascals Teriyaki Grill is located at 1760 North Bellflower Blvd.  The hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
