Recreation Fitness, Long Beach’s own “recess-based” outdoor fitness boot camp, is bringing its own version of the winter games to Whaley Park– and they want you to be part of the action.

The First Annual Winter Games will take place, Saturday, March 8 at 9 am at Whaley Park North. Two teams will compete in 6 events that will test strength, endurance, balance, speed, agility, team spirit and sass (yes, sass), while paying homage to some of the games going on in Russia- figure skating, biathlon, speed skating, curling, ski jump and bobsled. But unlike the traditional events, Recreation Fitness events take a humorous twist. For example, in the figure skating event, participants are timed to see who can hold a single skating pose the longest; and in the bobsled event, teams will have to push a teammate in a shopping cart across the field.

“We are serious about our workouts, but even more serious about our fun,” said Emily Duval Ledger, Recreation Fitness’s founder and lead trainer. “This event is just another way for us to show that if your workouts give you joy, great results come easy.”

Teams can earn points in a number of ways: aside from winning events, they can boost the score by cheering their team on and wearing the most creative ‘uniform’. “Participants can win a variety of prizes from some awesome local businesses; but more importantly, they will win bragging rights and a terrific workout,” said Ledger.

This event is open to all fitness levels, 13 years of age and older. Register online before February 22 for $20. You can also register through March 7 for $25.
