More than 350 people, including many with varying disabilities, will enjoy four days of beach and water fun August 3-7 at the 15th Annual Land Meets Sea Sports Camp. The summer day camp is a unique event for persons with disabilities ages 4 and older incorporating water, land, recreation and competitive sports.
The 2009 Land Meets Sea Sports Camp, a Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival event, is presented by Casa Colina in Pomona, a non-profit, community-governed organization dedicated to inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. The camp is part of Casa Colina’s Outdoor Adventures Program.
Land Meets Sea Sports Camp activities will take place at Marine Stadium, U.S. Sailing Center, Mother’s Beach and the Belmont Pool. Campers will enjoy a wide variety of activities, including water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, hot air ballooning, harbor cruises, martial arts, basketball, hockey, softball, tennis, yoga and scuba diving, among others. Water skiing, jet skiing and kayaking will begin at 8 a.m., with all other activities starting at 9 a.m.
One of the most unique aspects of Land Meets Sea Sports Camp is the variety of people who attend. The camp has participants ranging from young children to adults, as well as a wide spectrum of abilities. Beginners as well as those with experience are made to feel welcome and capable as they try challenging sports and recreational activities. The camp has traditionally drawn participants from the West Coast and Southwestern United States, and this year many participants are coming from across the country.
The cost per camper is $300, and includes all events, lunches, goodie bag and T-shirt.
In addition, there is a special one-day Kid’s Kamp on Wed., Aug. 5, open to youth ages 4-18, that includes crafts, sand castle building and other activities. The $100 cost includes lunch, snacks and T-shirt.
All participants in both camps must be registered prior to August 3. For an event schedule or further information, call (909) 596-7733, extension 2000.
