On Monday, May 12, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) will begin construction on a major water pipeline that runs underneath West Bixby Road in the Los Cerritos neighborhood. The project will affect traffic along Bixby Road and several connecting streets for approximately three months.
The pipeline, which is 78-inches in diameter, is a major water feeder line for the region’s water system. According to the MWD, the pipeline needs to be relined in order to continue to supply water to the district’s 19 million customers.
Construction is expected to be completed by mid-August. The contractor will work weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Additional details from the MWD:
“There will be one work site at the corner of W. Bixby Road and Cedar Avenue. The two north lanes of W. Bixby Road and the adjacent sidewalk will be closed from Country Club Drive to Pine Avenue. Cedar Avenue and the alleyway between Cedar Avenue and Pacific Avenue will be closed at the north side of W. Bixby Road. Two-way traffic will be allowed on the south side of W. Bixby Road.
“The construction work will result in inconveniences due to lane closures on W. Bixby Road, noise from excavation and construction equipment, lighting, and beeping noises from trucks. We will make every effort to minimize this inconvenience by completing the work as quickly as possible. The water supply to homes and businesses should not be affected.”
