Who Should Represent Area 2 on the LBCC Board?

Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees Vice President Doug Otto has scheduled the ad hoc advisory committee meetings to discuss the Area 2 Board vacancy. All meetings are open to the public.

“There will be opportunities during each of these meetings for the community to speak and give their thoughts on an ideal candidate to represent Area 2,” said Otto, chair of the ad hoc advisory committee. “Our goal is to find an individual who will not only represent Area 2, but will also address the needs of our current and future Long Beach City College students.” 

Members of the Long Beach City College (LBCC) community and the greater Long Beach community are invited to give comments regarding the Area 2 vacancy at any of the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, August 7 at 11:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, August 14 at 6:00 p.m.
  • Friday, August 22 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, August 26 at 5:00 p.m. – Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees: The ad hoc advisory committee will give recommendations to the Board on candidates to interview.
  • Tuesday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. – Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees: The Board will conduct candidate interviews, continue the evaluation process and may select the provisional appointment to fill the remainder term for Board of Trustees Area 2.

Each speaker will have up to three minutes to express their comments. All meetings will take place at Long Beach City College (Liberal Arts Campus), Room T-1100, 4901 East Carson St., Long Beach.

Additional meeting dates regarding the Area 2 Board of Trustees vacancy may be scheduled if needed and will be publicly notified in advance.

Foreign language translation, sign language interpretation, materials in alternative formats and other accommodations are available to the public upon request. All requests for reasonable accommodations to participate in a Board meeting must be made at least three working days (72 hours) in advance of the scheduled meeting date. The ad hoc advisory committee includes: Long Beach resident Richard Gaylord; Academic Senate President Karen Kane; Superintendent-President Eloy Ortiz Oakley; Board of Trustees Vice President Otto; and Student Trustee David Root.

Residents who are interested in being appointed as the provisional Board of Trustee Member must be a registered voter and live within Area 2 of the Long Beach Community College District. Area 2 is located within West and Central Long Beach. Residents can check the Los Angeles County Registrar’s website to see if they live in Area 2.

The appointed candidate will hold office until the next regularly scheduled Board election in April 2016. The appointed candidate is eligible to run for the Area 2 seat during this election. Applications must be received no later than August 22, 2014 by 12:00 p.m. Applications can be found on the LBCC website.
