The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (LBDHHS) Healthy Active Long Beach Program, in partnership with the Junior League Long Beach (JLLB), invites the community to attend the free, 10th Annual Kids in the Kitchen event on Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave., Long Beach.
“This important event highlights the success of community partnerships and provides an opportunity for residents to come together, have fun, and improve their health,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “I want to thank the Health Department and all the community partners who make this event possible each year.”
The event is co-hosted by Healthy Active Long Beach and JLLB and brings together many city and community programs to provide free skill-building activities designed to empower individuals to lead healthier lifestyles, and to decrease the risk for obesity and related chronic diseases.
“Developing healthy eating habits at an early age will provide life-long benefits,” said Councilmember Dee Andrews. “Proper nutrition, along with an active lifestyle, are extremely important for everybody, especially our children.”
The theme of this year’s event is “Fuel Up with Fruits and Veggies!” and in the spirit of the theme, attendees can sample healthy recipes featuring fruits and vegetables, have fun at the many educational games and interactive resource booths, and participate in multiple recreation opportunities, including a hula hoop assembly with KidTribe!
The Healthy Active Long Beach Program is made possible thanks to a grant received from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the California Department of Public Health’s Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch, a public health effort working with hundreds of partners and organizations to empower low-income Californians to live healthier lives through good nutrition and physical activity. Funding is from USDA SNAP-Ed, known in California as CalFresh. USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer. For CalFresh information, call 1-877-847-3663.
