Rotaract Long Beach prepares to host the 81st Annual Great Sand Sculpture Contest, a free, two-day community festival featuring amateur and professional sand sculpting, arts and crafts, live music and charity fundraising.  This year’s event will take place August 10-11, 2013 at Granada Beach, with all proceeds raised at the event benefiting the Long Beach Library Foundation. The theme of this year’s event is “Sculpting Literacy in your Community.”

The Great Sand Sculpture Contest is a Long Beach tradition and one of the city’s most popular summer events. Last year, more than 10,000 people attended the contest, which raised has more than $4,000 in prior years for Miller Children’s Hospital of Long Beach and LINC Housing. This year’s event is projected to attract even more participants and attendees.  Registration for teams, event sponsors and vendors is now open.

New to this year’s contest, Rotaract welcomes seven top professional sculptors from around the nation. On August 10th, Professional sculptors will go head-to-head, sculpting artwork depicting this year’s theme of “Literacy in your Community.” Thanks to generous contributions from the Long Beach SeaFestival and the Port of Long Beach, cash prizes will be awarded for the best professional sculptors.

On Sunday, August 11th, Rotaract welcomes over 35 registrants for this year’s community competition on August 11th, sponsored by iconic drink-brand Koolaid.  Winning teams are awarded prizes sponsored by local business owners. Team registration for this year’s community competition closes officially on August 6th.

Proceeds from the Great Sand Sculpture Contest will benefit the Long Beach Library Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization raising donations to support the programs, collections, services and programs of Long Beach Public Library. Rotaract Long Beach is asking all event participants and attendees to contribute either a monetary donation or one used or new book to support the LBPLF in their mission of providing support to enhance the Long Beach Public Library and encourage literacy and education for all members of the community.
