For her work in identifying a fruit fly gene that can be useful in diabetes and other biological studies, Melissa Kaye Jones from Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) received the 2012 Don Eden Graduate Student Research Award at the 24th annual California State University Biotechnology Symposium held recently in Santa Clara. The CSU Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB) sponsors the statewide event.

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) will be sending three teams to the American Collegiate Moot Court Association’s (ACMA) national tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, Calif.

The teams qualified for the national tournament with their performances at the 10th Annual Western Regional Moot Court Qualifying Tournament, hosted at CSULB in December.

Natalie Whitlock, a graduate student at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), has become the first CSULB student to receive the Southern California Kaiser Fellowship.

“I am very excited about this opportunity and am honored that I was one of six who were chosen out of over 100 applicants. Kaiser is very excited to have someone represent Cal State Long Beach.  I am looking forward to completing my master’s in health care administration and beginning my career with Kaiser,” said Whitlock.  “The knowledge and skills I have learned through my work experience as well as the master’s program here at CSULB aided me in obtaining this fellowship.  I am proud to be able to represent CSULB in the fellowship program.”

With all that went wrong during the shoot, Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) student Leah McKissock found it ironic that the song for the music video she was directing was called “Nothing is Wrong.”  Despite all the trials and tribulations, however, the final product has paid off…in a big way.

McKissock, 22, a senior film and electronic arts major, has been awarded the grand prize of $50,000 in the OnVidi.com Student Film Contest for her 2-minute, 22-second music video entry featuring Israeli artist Mika Ben-Yami as the best overall submission in the competition.

“I was very shocked and excited when I was told I won the grand prize in the OnVidi contest,” said McKissock, who will complete her CSULB bachelor’s degree at the end of this fall semester.  “Although the week prior I had been getting some e-mails from the contest staff informing me that I was among the finalists, it never seemed possible that I could win the grand prize and $50,000, especially with a music video.”

Stephanie Bryson

Stephanie Bryson, a 2011 graduate of California State University, Long Beach, has been named a Rhodes Scholar, the first graduate of the university to receive the internationally renowned award.

The Rhodes Trust named a total of 80 recipients worldwide, 32 from the United States, in this year’s class of Rhodes Scholars who will begin their studies at Oxford University in October 2012.

Britt Rios-Ellis, a health science professor at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB), has begun her work as a member of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Advisory Committee on HIV and STD Prevention and Treatment.  The acronym for the committee is CHAC.

In addition, Rios-Ellis has been elected to the President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) CHAC Disclosure Work Group.

All veterans, their families and friends are invited to join the CSULB community as it recognizes the nation’s military veterans, especially the more than 400 student veterans currently attending Cal State Long Beach.  The event is being presented by CSULB’s Office of Veterans Affairs Services.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to invite friends and neighbors who are veterans or bring a picture of a veteran who cannot attend the event.

Dave Kelly, director of Advanced Media Production (AMP) at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB), and his staff have won a Western Access Video Excellence (WAVE) Award for a documentary they produced titled “Panama Canal Expansion: The Battle for Jobs and Cargo.”

A historically-based documentary, the 19-minute “Panama Canal Expansion” video also focused on the canal’s current construction effort and the potential impact it will have on global trade and shipping routes.

Statistics show that only about 20 percent of engineering students are women, and that women make up only about 10 percent of professional engineers.  Three women in the College of Engineering at Cal State Long Beach are trying to change that, and four schools here are benefiting from their efforts.

Bei Lu and Panadda Marayong, both assistant professors from CSULB’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Lily Gossage, director of the College of Engineering Recruitment and Retention Center, have received about $16,000 in grant funding from the IEEE Control Systems Society, including supplemental funding from the California Space Grant Consortium, to implement a unique program that encourages elementary school girls to explore an interest in engineering careers.

Grace Kim, a graduate student in nutritional science at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), was named the campus recipient of the 2011-12 William R. Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Each year, the California State University (CSU) selects 23 students, one from each campus in the system, to receive the Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award, which is among the system’s highest forms of recognition for student achievement. The $3,000 awards are given to students who have demonstrated financial need, experienced personal hardships, and have attributes such as superior academic performance, exemplary community service and significant personal achievements.

On Friday, September 23, 2011 the groundbreaking of Cal State Long Beach’s Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Pavilion and Plaza was met with true fanfare. Three conservatory faculty—Carolyn Bremer, Martin Herman and Alan Shockley—wrote fanfares in celebration of the $2.5 million project.  The groundbreaking indicated the official start of construction for what will become the hub of the conservatory, serving students, faculty and the community.

The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Pavilion and Plaza are expected to be completed at the end of the summer in 2012.

The Aquatic Academy course will feature speakers from the California Department of Water Resources, the Desert Research Institute, the University of Arizona’s School of Geography and Development, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service, the Long Beach Water Department, and the Aquarium of the Pacific. “Raising public awareness of this issue is crucial. In developing this course, the Aquarium of the Pacific is providing an opportunity for people to gain a deeper knowledge of the situation we’re in here in Southern California, giving them a foundation from which to make their own decisions about water use and take action,” says Jeanine Jones, interstate resources manager, California Department of Water Resources. Jones helped develop and organize the course with Aquarium of the Pacific President and CEO Dr. Jerry Schubel.

“California’s water infrastructure was designed based on historical climate conditions. We need to be prepared to adapt to a changing future climate that will bring new drought and flooding challenges. When people think of Southern California and water problems, drought is usually what comes to mind first. Many people don’t realize that the state’s record for twenty-four-hour precipitation intensity was set in Los Angeles County. Southern California is a region of climate extremes, and climate change will make these extremes—droughts and floods—become more extreme,” Jones says.

The course cost is $50 for Aquarium members, $60 for non-members, and $15 extra for CEU credit in conjunction with California State University, Long Beach’s continuing education program. For more information on the course or to RSVP, call (562) 951-1609.
