CAL REP Makes Waves With Odets’ Revolutionary Classic

California Repertory Company begins their second season aboard The Queen Mary on September 24th with Waiting for Lefty: Seeing Red, Clifford Odets’ Depression-set, confrontational drama. Directed by innovative University of California, San Diego theatre professor, Kim Rubinstein, Waiting for Lefty is based on the New York taxi driver strike of 1934. The first of Odets’ plays to be produced, it was originally staged by the acclaimed Group Theatre. The ensemble revolutionized acting by introducing the visceral power of Russian naturalism to the American Theater.

Grant will Help Cal State Students Produce Their Own Films

The Film and Electronic Arts Department at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) has received a $50,000 grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that will directly aid students in their efforts to produce their own films.

In all, HFPA presented a record $1.54 million in financial grants to 41 film schools and non-profit organizations at its recent annual installation luncheon in Beverly Hills.

“The money from the grant goes directly to our students,” said Michael Pounds, professor and chair of CSULB’s Film and Electronic Arts’ (FEA) Department. “It funds the production of student documentaries and narrative films and other student film projects. We have classes here in film appreciation and production and this money allows us to give students a chance to make films they otherwise could not afford to do.”

Greater Los Angeles Master of Fine Arts Exhibition and CSULB MFA Open Studios: Sunday, September 5

The Greater Los Angeles Masters of Fine Arts Exhibition 2010 (GLAMFA) opens September 5, 2010 through September 9, 2010 at California State University, Long Beach. Concurrently, the University also hosts the graduate Open Studios.

Over 70 emerging artists will be featured at the GLAMFA / Open Studios event, now in its sixth year. GLAMFA is the premiere regional MFA exhibition for the Southern California area. The show aims to generate and maintain an active dialogue between an emerging generation of LA artists and its public.

Animal Acres “Compassionate Cuisine” Food & Music Event Friday, October 1 at CSULB

The community is invited to celebrate International Vegetarian Day in Long Beach at the 5th annual Compassionate Cuisine, Friday, October 1, 2010, at the beautiful Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at CSULB. All proceeds benefit Animal Acres farmed animal sanctuary to support its animal care and public education programs.

Attendees will enjoy strolling the illuminated Japanese Garden as they sample gourmet vegan food from a wide array of local restaurants and foodservice companies, including Long Beach based Whole Foods, Zephyr, and Viento y Agua. New to the event this year is Seabirds vegan street food truck.

CSULB Officials Announce Appointment of Inaugural Barbara and Ray Alpert Endowed Chair for Jewish Studies

Jeffrey Blutinger, an associate professor of history and expert in 19th-century Jewish intellectual history, has been named the inaugural Barbara and Ray Alpert Endowed Chair for Jewish Studies at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) for the 2010-11 academic year.

The endowed chair is the result of a $1 million donation from Ray and Barbara Alpert to the CSULB Jewish Studies Program in 2008. The university named the endowed chair in perpetuity in their honor.

CSULB Ranked 4th Best Public Regional University in the West by U.S. News & World Report

U.S.News & World Report has ranked California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) the fourth best public regional university in the western United States in its 2011 edition of “America’s Best Colleges Guide,” which will be released on Aug. 24. The West region includes 13 states from Texas to California to Washington and includes Alaska and Hawaii.

CSULB U-Pass Program to resume today, August 16

Starting today, August 16, all California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) students enrolled in the fall semester, and currently employed faculty and staff will be able to ride for free on all Long Beach Transit buses and routes when they swipe their current university identification card in the bus farebox. The ridership boosting program, paid for by CSULB, started in September 2008 and caused ridership increases from 1,200 average daily boardings to over 7,000 daily boardings.

8 CSULB Representatives Receive CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program Awards

Eight representatives from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) are among the 2010-11 recipients of the CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program awards, which are given in an effort to increase the number of individuals completing doctoral programs, especially those who may be interested in applying and competing for future CSU faculty positions.

The largest program of its kind in the nation, the Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) selection committee reviewed 86 applications, and the chancellor approved the names of 63 candidates for 2010-11 funding.

CSULB one of Princeton Review’s Best in the West

The Princeton Review has designated California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) a “Best in the West” college in its Web site feature, “2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region,” which was posted on Monday, Aug. 2.

One of just 120 institutions receiving the “Best in the West” mention, CSULB was selected primarily for its excellent academic program, according to The Princeton Review officials. Collectively, there were 623 colleges named to its four “regional best” lists, a total that constitutes only about 25 percent of the nation’s 2,500 four-year colleges.

“The Princeton Review ranking is significant because it takes into account the opinions of those we serve – the students,” said CSULB President F. King Alexander.

CSULB Communication Studies Professor Receives 2010 Douglas Ehninger Award

Craig R. Smith, professor of communication studies at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), has been named the recipient of the 2010 Douglas W. Ehninger Award for lifetime achievement in rhetorical scholarship by the National Communication Association (NCA).

The Ehninger Award honors distinguished scholars who have executed research programs in rhetorical theory, rhetorical criticism or public address studies. The award is given to a person who, through multiple publications and presentations around a rhetorical topic or theme, demonstrates intellectual creativity, perseverance and impact on academic communities.

Cal State Long Beach English Professor Awarded Pushcart Prize

Patty Seyburn, an assistant professor of English at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB), was awarded the coveted Pushcart Prize recently and will see her poem “The Case for Free Will” included in the anthology “The Pushcart Prize XXXV: Best of the Small Presses” (2011).

Every year, the Pushcart Prizes are awarded to short stories and poems published in literary magazines and then collected in an anthology. The Pushcart Press is devoted to writers, small presses and non-commercial publishing, and it has been recognized as among the most influential publishers in American history by Publishers Weekly.

Commentary: Dead Wrong

The Supreme Court’s ruling on Chicago’s gun control law of June 28th severely restricts what states can do regarding gun control within their borders. True conservatives, like myself, are appalled. Not only does this narrow 5-4 decision infringe on states’ rights, or what’s left of them, it violates the conservative justices own claim that they read the constitution using the lens of the original intent of the Founders. The fact is the Second Amendment was added to the Constitution to strengthen the states’ right to form a militia by empowering their citizens to bear arms under special circumstances. It was not written to give citizens the right to own guns in all circumstances.

CSULB presents free seminar Family Finance Forum

A free seminar designed to answer questions related to families’ law, insurance and financial planning needs will be presented by Cal State Long Beach’s (CSULB) Office of Estate and Gift Planning on Wednesday, July 21.

Called the Family Finance Forum, the seminar will run from 7-9 p.m. in CSULB’s Cornerstone Building offices, located at 1000 N. Studebaker Road (near the corner of Anaheim Road and Studebaker Road).

The two-hour Family Finance Forum will feature professionals from the law, insurance and financial planning fields who will be on hand to provide insight and work through many of the tough decisions that families have to make, including: financial planning concepts that can enable a bright future for a family; sorting through the various insurance options and determining which is best in the long term; and how to understand wills, trusts and powers of attorney.

Middle School Girls live at CSULB during Engineering Girls Internship program

To broaden their knowledge of the various aspects of engineering, 10 high-achieving middle school girls lived last week at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) in the student residence halls as the first cohort of the university’s new Engineering Girls Internship program.

The Engineering Girls Internship program provides students with the opportunity to interface with engineering and human factors professors, professional engineers and managers. The program is designed to expand on the success of CSULB’s Women Engineers @ the Beach program, now celebrating 10 years at the university.

Get hands-on experience at the Origami Festival July 11

Community members can discover why people have been enchanted by the art of origami—Japanese paper folding—for centuries as the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) hosts the annual Origami Festival on Sunday, July 11, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Guests will have hands-on experience creating a three dimensional object from a single sheet of paper. More than 40 experts from local and national origami clubs will teach a variety of different folds for people of all experience levels including animals, geometric forms, and moveable origami.

This year’s Origami Festival also celebrates the Star Festival, Tanabata, a traditional Asian tale about two constellations who were separated by the Milky Way after forgetting their celestial duties. Guests will learn to write Japanese calligraphy and their own wishes on colorful strips of paper to hang on branches of bamboo to take home and be carried by the wind up to the heavens.

CSULB Jazz Ensemble, Students Garnered Top Honors at the DownBeat Music Awards

The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) continued to demonstrate its strength and depth in the field of vocal jazz as its students and premiere jazz ensemble Pacific Standard Time recently earned an unprecedented five honors in the 33rd annual DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards.

Pacific Standard Time was recognized for Outstanding Performance by a Vocal Jazz Group at the graduate college level. The group is directed by Christine Guter.

Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation Increases Scholarship Amounts During Difficult Economic Times

The Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation announced on Sunday, June 27, 2010, that they will increase the award amounts for their college scholarships at both California State University Long Beach and Long Beach City College, effective Fall 2010.

“In this difficult economic period, we have increased our commitment to Long Beach area youth by increasing our offerings,” said Frank Newell, Chair of the Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation. “We are proud not only to continue offering scholarships to students during these uncertain times, but to step up and increase the scholarship values when they are needed most.”

Kenneth Walker Dance Project (KWDP), a contemporary ballet company, premieres new works along with audience favorites for the sixth season in a row in an evening entitled “From the Ground Up” one night only on Saturday, August 14, 2010.

Fulbright Award takes Lionel Mandy from Cal State Long Beach to Sri Lanka

Dr Lionel Mandy, a full-time lecturer in the Africana Studies Department at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), has been selected for a Fulbright Lectureship Award that will have him teaching at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka during the 2010-11 academic year.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends approximately 1,100 American scholars and professionals per year to approximately 125 countries, where they lecture and/or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

“When I learned of the award, I was ecstatic. It is a great honor to be selected as a Fulbright Award recipient,” said Mandy, a Long Beach resident who leaves for Sri Lanka at the end of September and returns to the states in late June 2011. “I told all my family and friends around the globe first, and then took a breath to consider packing up all my belongings and moving to a place where I have never been to teach. That got me even more excited, and I remain excited now.”

Cal State Long Beach still has open spots in popular Summer Camps

Parents looking for an outlet that keeps children active both mentally and physically during the summer can enroll their kids in a pair of four-week camps as California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) again offers its Academic Enrichment summer camp and 49er camp.

Open to boys and girls ages 5-12, the first session of these camps begins June 21 and runs through July 16. Academic Enrichment Camp goes from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and 49er Camp runs from 12:30-5 p.m. Children attending both camps are supervised during lunch and transitioned to the 49er Camp at no additional cost.
