The Legacy Project supports the interest of students and their access to science.

The Aquarium of the Pacific recently received grants from Oxy Long Beach, Inc. and the LeBurta Atherton Foundation that will benefit the Aquarium’s Legacy Project. This project will continue the Aquarium’s long-standing relationship with two local schools and provide science learning experiences to underserved Long Beach families. Oxy granted $25,000 toward this project, and the Atherton Foundation gave $10,000.

The Aquarium has established relationships with the Cesar Chavez Elementary School and Washington Middle School communities and will continue to build on those relationships through the Legacy Project. Aquarium educators will adjust the focus of the project to allow for more sustainability and bring high-quality science activities, materials, and experiences to the parents, students, and teachers of those particular schools, as well as other Title I schools in Long Beach.

The certification by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency is based upon an international standard for energy efficiency.  Buildings that earn the Energy Star use 35 percent less energy and generate 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than similar buildings nationwide.

The mission of Operation Jump Start (OJS) is to provide structure and resources for disadvantaged youth to reach their potential through a college education. OJS provides 1 to 1 mentoring to 6th – 12 grade students from the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). Founded in 1994, OJS has positively impacted the lives of vulnerable youth, as well as countless community volunteers, each of whom chose to make a difference in the life of a child.

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) will be sending three teams to the American Collegiate Moot Court Association’s (ACMA) national tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, Calif.

The teams qualified for the national tournament with their performances at the 10th Annual Western Regional Moot Court Qualifying Tournament, hosted at CSULB in December.

Natalie Whitlock

Natalie Whitlock, a graduate student at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), has become the first CSULB student to receive the Southern California Kaiser Fellowship.

“I am very excited about this opportunity and am honored that I was one of six who were chosen out of over 100 applicants. Kaiser is very excited to have someone represent Cal State Long Beach.  I am looking forward to completing my master’s in health care administration and beginning my career with Kaiser,” said Whitlock.  “The knowledge and skills I have learned through my work experience as well as the master’s program here at CSULB aided me in obtaining this fellowship.  I am proud to be able to represent CSULB in the fellowship program.”

The competitive funding expands the reach of the innovative Family Literacy – Community College Partnership Initiative supported by MetLife Foundation. Long Beach Family Literacy Program and the other nine recipients will use the support to implement plans for outreach to families about going to college, including use of a comprehensive set of interactive, bilingual resources available online.

With all that went wrong during the shoot, Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) student Leah McKissock found it ironic that the song for the music video she was directing was called “Nothing is Wrong.”  Despite all the trials and tribulations, however, the final product has paid off…in a big way.

McKissock, 22, a senior film and electronic arts major, has been awarded the grand prize of $50,000 in the OnVidi.com Student Film Contest for her 2-minute, 22-second music video entry featuring Israeli artist Mika Ben-Yami as the best overall submission in the competition.

“I was very shocked and excited when I was told I won the grand prize in the OnVidi contest,” said McKissock, who will complete her CSULB bachelor’s degree at the end of this fall semester.  “Although the week prior I had been getting some e-mails from the contest staff informing me that I was among the finalists, it never seemed possible that I could win the grand prize and $50,000, especially with a music video.”

Stephanie Bryson

Stephanie Bryson, a 2011 graduate of California State University, Long Beach, has been named a Rhodes Scholar, the first graduate of the university to receive the internationally renowned award.

The Rhodes Trust named a total of 80 recipients worldwide, 32 from the United States, in this year’s class of Rhodes Scholars who will begin their studies at Oxford University in October 2012.

The event is part of “Banned, Blacklisted and Boycotted: Censorship and the Response to It” (also known as “The B-Word Project”)—a campus-wide program exploring all aspects of censorship.  The project is coordinated by the Carpenter Performing Arts Center and funded by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters and the Doris Duke Charitable Fund.

In 1989, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., canceled the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibit called “The Perfect Moment” because it did not want to adversely affect congressional funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.  Instead of defusing the controversy, however, the censoring of the show sparked a national debate over public funding for the arts, the question of how to define obscenity and who gets to decide, and whether censorship is acceptable.

Britt Rios-Ellis

Britt Rios-Ellis, a health science professor at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB), has begun her work as a member of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Advisory Committee on HIV and STD Prevention and Treatment.  The acronym for the committee is CHAC.

In addition, Rios-Ellis has been elected to the President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) CHAC Disclosure Work Group.

Parents of middle schoolers can now sign up their children for a series of innovative online math tutorials provided by the nonprofit MIND Research Institute.  The Spatial Temporal (ST) Math® tutorials use a visual approach and games to teach math concepts, with lessons aligned to state standards.

Siblings of middle schoolers will gain access to the free lessons, too.

The MIND Research Institute helps elementary and secondary students to reach their full academic potential through math instructional software and systems.  The institute also conducts basic neuroscientific, mathematics and education research to improve math education and advance scientific understanding.
