Nationally syndicated columnist and author Arianna Huffington will be this year’s featured speaker at the fourth annual Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) Distinguished Speakers Series on Thursday, Oct. 21, in the campus’ Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

Huffington will speak on “Politics and the New Media”, discussing how the internet is shifting power to citizens and having a game-changing impact on the political world.

CAL REP Makes Waves With Odets’ Revolutionary Classic

California Repertory Company begins their second season aboard The Queen Mary on September 24th with Waiting for Lefty: Seeing Red, Clifford Odets’ Depression-set, confrontational drama. Directed by innovative University of California, San Diego theatre professor, Kim Rubinstein, Waiting for Lefty is based on the New York taxi driver strike of 1934. The first of Odets’ plays to be produced, it was originally staged by the acclaimed Group Theatre. The ensemble revolutionized acting by introducing the visceral power of Russian naturalism to the American Theater.

49ers Women’s Soccer Team on a 3-Game Winning Streak

The 49ers are set to play host to Utah State and Sacramento State this weekend.
The Long Beach State women’s soccer team (3-1-0) is looking to extend its three-game winning streak this weekend as it plays host to Utah State and Sacramento State. The 49ers are set to take on the Aggies at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, before returning to George Allen Field for a 1 p.m. showdown against the Hornets on Sunday (Sept. 5).
Link Earns National Honors
Sophomore Nadia Link was named the CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week the website announced Tuesday. Link earned the national honor after playing a key role in the 49ers’ three wins from Aug. 23-29. She delivered the game-winner in the 89th minute of a 1-0 victory at Fresno State and then scored the first goal in an eventual 2-1 triumph over No. 21 Washington State. Link saved her best performance for last, finding the back of the net twice as The Beach knocked off 16th-ranked Virginia Tech, 2-1. Link was also selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s College Team of the Week.
49ers in the Rankings
Long Beach State was ranked 21st in the CollegeSoccer360.com poll and 24th in the Soccer America poll after defeating then No. 21 Washington State and No. 16 Virginia Tech last weekend.

Grant will Help Cal State Students Produce Their Own Films

The Film and Electronic Arts Department at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) has received a $50,000 grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that will directly aid students in their efforts to produce their own films.
In all, HFPA presented a record $1.54 million in financial grants to 41 film schools and non-profit organizations at its recent annual installation luncheon in Beverly Hills.
“The money from the grant goes directly to our students,” said Michael Pounds, professor and chair of CSULB’s Film and Electronic Arts’ (FEA) Department. “It funds the production of student documentaries and narrative films and other student film projects. We have classes here in film appreciation and production and this money allows us to give students a chance to make films they otherwise could not afford to do.”

Dirtbags Send Another Player to the Majors

Danny Espinosa joins the Nationals, becoming the 15th former Dirtbag in the bigs this weekend.
Infielder Danny Espinosa was called up to the major leagues by the Washington Nationals as part of the September roster expansion, becoming the 15th former Long Beach State baseball player to play in the MLB in 2010.
Espinosa becomes the 37th player in Long Beach State history to reach the major leagues. A shortstop for the Dirtbags from 2006-08, Espinosa also continues a great tradition of infield success for the program, that now has seen three of the team’s last four shortstops play professionally in Bobby Crosby, Troy Tulowitzki, and now Espinosa.

Greater Los Angeles Master of Fine Arts Exhibition and CSULB MFA Open Studios: Sunday, September 5

The Greater Los Angeles Masters of Fine Arts Exhibition 2010 (GLAMFA) opens September 5, 2010 through September 9, 2010 at California State University, Long Beach. Concurrently, the University also hosts the graduate Open Studios.
Over 70 emerging artists will be featured at the GLAMFA / Open Studios event, now in its sixth year. GLAMFA is the premiere regional MFA exhibition for the Southern California area. The show aims to generate and maintain an active dialogue between an emerging generation of LA artists and its public.

All proceeds benefit Animal Acres farmed animal sanctuary to support its animal care and public education programs.
Attendees will enjoy strolling the illuminated Japanese Garden as they sample gourmet vegan food from a wide array of local restaurants and foodservice companies, including Long Beach based Whole Foods, Zephyr, and Viento y Agua. New to the event this year is Seabirds vegan street food truck.

CSULB Officials Announce Appointment of Inaugural Barbara and Ray Alpert Endowed Chair for Jewish Studies

Jeffrey Blutinger, an associate professor of history and expert in 19th-century Jewish intellectual history, has been named the inaugural Barbara and Ray Alpert Endowed Chair for Jewish Studies at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) for the 2010-11 academic year.
The endowed chair is the result of a $1 million donation from Ray and Barbara Alpert to the CSULB Jewish Studies Program in 2008. The university named the endowed chair in perpetuity in their honor.

Dirtbags announce 2011 schedule

Long Beach State baseball has announced the Dirtbags 2011 schedule, which will feature home series against Cal State Fullerton, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State as well as road trips to Arizona State, Stanford and a tournament played at the San Francisco Giants home ballpark of AT&T Park.
The Dirtbags will continue a number of traditions, including putting together one of the most difficult schedules in the country. One year after putting together the 7th-strongest schedule in the nation, Long Beach State continues to ramp up the difficulty in an attempt to be as tested as possible.
Another tradition will be renewed in 2011, as the Dirtbags will play home-and-home series with Cal State Fullerton for the first time since 2007.

CSULB Ranked 4th Best Public Regional University in the West by U.S. News & World Report

U.S.News & World Report has ranked California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) the fourth best public regional university in the western United States in its 2011 edition of “America’s Best Colleges Guide,” which will be released on Aug. 24. The West region includes 13 states from Texas to California to Washington and includes Alaska and Hawaii.

Jordan High School Pool Closed for Repairs

The Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine has announced that the Jordan High School Pool, located at 6500 Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach, closed to the public as of Saturday, August 14. The closure is necessary for the Long Beach Unified School District to make needed repairs to the pool before the school opens for the coming year. The pool at the Will J. Reid Scout Park at 4747 Daisy Avenue is available until August 28 for public use. Hours are 1-3 p.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m Mondays-Saturdays.

CSULB U-Pass Program to resume today, August 16

Starting today, August 16, all California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) students enrolled in the fall semester, and currently employed faculty and staff will be able to ride for free on all Long Beach Transit buses and routes when they swipe their current university identification card in the bus farebox. The ridership boosting program, paid for by CSULB, started in September 2008 and caused ridership increases from 1,200 average daily boardings to over 7,000 daily boardings.

8 CSULB Representatives Receive CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program Awards

Eight representatives from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) are among the 2010-11 recipients of the CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program awards, which are given in an effort to increase the number of individuals completing doctoral programs, especially those who may be interested in applying and competing for future CSU faculty positions.
The largest program of its kind in the nation, the Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) selection committee reviewed 86 applications, and the chancellor approved the names of 63 candidates for 2010-11 funding.

CSULB one of Princeton Review’s Best in the West

The Princeton Review has designated California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) a “Best in the West” college in its Web site feature, “2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region,” which was posted on Monday, Aug. 2.
One of just 120 institutions receiving the “Best in the West” mention, CSULB was selected primarily for its excellent academic program, according to The Princeton Review officials. Collectively, there were 623 colleges named to its four “regional best” lists, a total that constitutes only about 25 percent of the nation’s 2,500 four-year colleges.
“The Princeton Review ranking is significant because it takes into account the opinions of those we serve – the students,” said CSULB President F. King Alexander.

Upward Bound Provides Services For Long Beach and Signal Hill Youth

Upward Bound is a college preparatory program that assists 165 eligible high school students in graduating from high school, entering college and successfully earning their baccalaureate degree. Upward Bound provides a variety of services to local Long Beach youth who are low-income, at-risk for not graduating high school and typically would be the first generation in their families to attend college.
Services include the following: Summer Residential Program, Mentor Program, Academic Tutoring, College Visitation Trips, Saturday Academy, Service Learning Hours Opportunities, Fundraising, Team Building Activities and Parent Support Group.

LBUSD Superintendent, Governor Schwarzenegger Applaud Adoption of National Standards

The Long Beach Unified School District joined Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in applauding the California State Board of Education’s unanimous vote to adopt the national Common Core State Standards.
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort to establish a single set of high and clear educational standards for English-language arts and mathematics that states can share and voluntarily adopt. Designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents and school administrators, the Common Core reflect the best available evidence and the highest state standards from across the country. As part of the adoption process, states have the option to add additional standards as a way to encourage high-standards states like California to maintain and even extend the rigor of their existing standards.
By providing clear goals for learning, the standards help teachers make certain that students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful.

LBUSD Helps California Become a Finalist for Race to Top Funds

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the state's top education officials had a signing ceremony at LBUSD's Lafayette Elementary School last month before submitting the Race to the Top application.
The U.S. Department of Education announced today that California is one of 19 finalists for federal Race to the Top funding, which could bring between $18 million and $26 million to the Long Beach Unified School District.
LBUSD was one of seven California school systems that helped to develop the state’s latest application for up to $700 million in funding. California is vying with other states to win competitive grants under the Obama administration program. Although the state’s first application was rejected, California officials have revised their application in hopes of claiming a share of the second round of funding.
“We’re encouraged by today’s announcement, which is an important vote of confidence by the U.S. Department of Education,” said LBUSD Superintendent Christopher J. Steinhauser. “Our school district played a key role in developing California’s latest application for funds. We worked closely with other California school districts and policymakers at the state and national levels, and we deeply appreciate their support.”
