The event is geared toward parents and aims to assist parents in communicating with their children to create a more peaceful home environment. This free event, sponsored by the PTO, is open to the public. Complimentary childcare will be provided for school age children to parents that RSVP to dperram@westerlyschool.org by February 7th. This Parent Education Night will be held on Thursday, February 9th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Westerly School, 2950 East 29th Street, Long Beach.

The first presentation of the three-part series will be “How Arts Education Builds Student Confidence,” a panel discussion held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, at the Westerly School Arts Village, located at 2950 East 29th Street, Long Beach. Featured panelists include Geraldine Walkup, Visual and Performing Arts Administrator at the Office of Education, and Carlton Wilborn, artist, life coach, author, and inspirational speaker. Using a speedway theme for the event, volunteers hope to stay on-track and raise $290,000 through ticket sales and auction items.

“A Night at the Westerly Speedway,” takes place Saturday, May 15 with dinner, dancing and auctions.

Throughout the evening, guests can bid on 300 wonderful items in a silent auction. Later a live auction will take place with 25 amazing items that includes tickets to the “American Idol” season finale on May 26 and tickets to the USC vs. Notre Dame game on November 27.  More than 200 auction items are already available for browsing online at westerlyschool.maestroweb.com.

Presenter Dr. Katz is an educator, author, filmmaker and social theorist who is a pioneer in the fields of gender violence prevention education and media literacy. His multimedia discussion will include clips from his award-winning educational videos on the role of media in shaping social norms around masculinity and femininity.

Topics on parenting boys will include: violence in media and real life; the impact of the video game culture on boys; raising emotionally literate boys; body image among boys; tensions between academics and athletics; issues for fathers of sons; and issues for mothers of sons.

Named in honor of founding headmaster, Raymond F. Bizjack, the Arts Village enhances Westerly’s educational philosophy which is to encourage creative and independent thinking, to cultivate an appreciation for the arts, and to combine academics with experiential, hands-on learning.

Day Camp is offered from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, with play on Darrick Martin Court in the St. Anthony High School Gymnasium located at 6th and Alamitos. Martin was an NBA basketball player for 13 years, most recently with the Toronto Raptors. He is a graduate of St. Anthony High School’s Class of 1988.
