Outrigger Canoe Races Highlight Kahakai Sprints at Marine Stadium

Long Beach Sea Festival: July 18

The spirit of The Islands invades historic Marine Stadium – site of the 1932 Olympic rowing, canoeing and kayaking events – on Saturday, July 18 for the 2009 Kahakai Sprints.

Clubs and individuals in 36 classes from throughout California and the western U.S. will compete in six-person, two-person and individual outrigger canoes, rowing on a 500-meter straightaway course. Knock-out finals will be held on a shorter 250-meter course.

Gates open at 6:30 a.m., with the first race at 8:30 a.m. and the last race scheduled for 3 p.m.  Food – including Hawaiian-style dishes – and beverage will be available, and the day includes kid’s races, face painting and a raffle.  For further information, call (949) 598-6491 or visit www.kahakai.org.

Long Beach to Host USA Volleyball Beach Development Camp

Long Beach Sea Festival: July 22-24

A three-day USAVolleyball (USAVB) Beach Development Camp for youths 12-18 years of age will be held Wednesday through Friday, July 22-24 in Long Beach at Alamitos Beach.

The three-day camp, part of Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival 2009, will be led by USAVB staff members and selected coaches and players from the AVP and FIVB tours, with  emphasis on skill development, technique, strategy and the elements.

The final day will include a half-day tournament with prizes, and each camper will receive a written evaluation and be added to the USAVB beach athlete pipeline.

Cost per camper is $250, with each camp day running from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Interested players can register online at www.regonline.com/usavbeach, or call (310) 364-5214 for further information.

USA Volleyball to Host Beach Coaches Clinic

Long Beach Sea Festival: July 21

USA Volleyball will host a High Performance Beach Coaches Clinic from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 in Long Beach at Alamitos Beach.

The clinic, a Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival event, is open to anyone wishing to learn more about playing and/or coaching beach volleyball, and will include a series of drills and general information sessions.  Cost is $50 per person and interested participants can register online at www.regonline.com/usavbeach.
