ArtExchange (ArtX) will host national artists, art sales and featured exhibitions for “artXwalk” happening June 13, 2015. The monthly celebration of visual art – each Second Saturday at 3rd and Elm in Long Beach’s East Village Arts District – is a free event, open to the public, and full of festivities.

Featured this month, Large Scale // Small Scale at Room + Border presents works from studio artists Rebecca Giesking, Noel Madrid and Joy Shannon that showcases a group of landscape based paintings exploring scale and. 

Also featured this month is PRINT SALE // ART SALE at the Collective Print Studio’. which presents a special opportunity to collect affordable, original artworks by Long Beach artists.

Multiple free family-friendly activities will be held in the ArtX Classrom including, SEED BOMB workshop and hands-on instruction with illuminated paper circuits and circuit bend basics.

The New Familiar at the ArtX Main Gallery ends this month. The New Familiar consists of works from artists that participated in the rural Wisconsin ACRE program. The exhibition brings together emerging and mid-career artists from across the nation in Long Beach for one of a series of exhibitions happening nationwide.

Studio artists will also showcase works in process in their respective studio spaces.

Featured Studio Artists

Large scale/ Small scale at Room + Border (Artists: Noel Madrid, Rebecca Giesking and Joy Shannon) showcases a group of landscape based paintings exploring scale. Noel Madrid will be showing works in progress of larger landscape based abstracted paintings exploring color and composition of the local Long Beach community. Rebecca Giesking will contrast these larger paintings will smaller, intimate paintings of landscapes based on online media. Joy Shannon will be continues this theme of scale, showcasing a series of small and large scale watercolor and ink paintings investigating ancient mythologies in the style of black and grey tattoo flash paintings, as well as traditional watercolor portraiture.

PRINT SALE // ART SALE at The Collective Print Studio (Artists: Various) presents an opening reception of works on paper for sale by local emerging artists.

Exhibition in the Main Gallery

The New Familiar at ArtX Main Gallery (Artists: Marrissa Williamson, Samuel Hertz, Sean Patrick Landis, Stephanie Lie, Sarah Hotchkiss and Megan Mueller) presents six artists in the exhibition use a variety of media and techniques to explore their individual artistic narratives. Drawing from the stable of the ACRE artist residences in 2014, the exhibition features six artists whose work break down the everyday and make something extraordinary. Through artwork the community will explore how people take everyday objects and experiences, add their signature, and give new perspectives on the familiar.

The New Familiar, curated by ArtX Studio Artist Steven Frost, opened on May 9, 2015 and will have its closing reception on June 18, 2015.

Free Activities in the Classroom

SEED BOMB workshop will use all natural supplies of seeds, clay and dirt to get seeds sown in a hard to reach places. Concluding the workshop, participants will take to the surrounding area to plant seed bombs. No gardening experience necessary. Open to all ages.

Illuminated Paper Circuits activity will incorporate LEDs on a paper or vellum substrate to build a simple circuit and add a low-power light system to an art piece, drawing, card, or folded form.

Circuit Bend Basics activity will create an output jack with volume adjustment and pitch dial in a hands-on exploration of battery powered toys. Basic soldering skills recommended.

From the Studio Artists

Post Adolescent Residue // Analog #2 (Artist: John Thatcher Montgomery, Jr.) – an examination of pieces and parts that do not get incorporated into a final piece of art.

My Hood (Artist: J. Renee Tanner) – a series of cityscapes inspired by the collection of architecture in downtown Long Beach.

Open Studio at illuminoidal arts (Artist: Leah Dixon) – a presentation of new and old works on display, including some new digital paintings.

Open Studio (Artist: Christine Fuchs) – an exploration of the “success & failure of a line” in-process works from the past month will be on display for participants to see in the midst of their completion.

Open Studio at McArts Studio (Artist: Kenny McBride) – a presentation of artwork.
