longfellow-hughes-share-theOn Saturday, February 23, 2013, Hughes Middle School and Longfellow Elementary will team up with Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County (Goodwill SOLAC) to host a Used Clothing Drive at Hughes Middle School.

February is the season to “Share the Love” by donating your old clothing and household goods to Hughes & Longfellow schools for Goodwill SOLAC. The event is open to the community. Drop off items on the Longfellow Upper Playground on California Avenue between Bixby and Roosevelt. Last year our community gathered almost 3 tons of material at this drive – and we hope to gather 4 tons this year! Items accepted include:

Clothing, Accessories (pocketbooks, backpacks, hats, gloves, ties, scarves, belts, etc.), shoes, and Household fabrics (bedding, curtains, towels, bath mats, etc.).

Donated items will go to Goodwill SOLAC for resale to support education, skills training and job placement services for individuals with barriers to employment and other disabilities. Your donation helps create new local jobs. Donors will receive a donation receipt for their taxes.

The benefits of recycling clothing are four-fold: 1) it raises money for our schools! Goodwill will give us a stipend for everything we collect; 2) it supports Goodwill’s job training programs for local residents; 3) it offers low cost clothing to the community; and 4) it keeps old clothes out of the landfill – which is critical as textile waste is a very big problem in the U.S. Every year over 11 million TONS of textiles – almost 85% of all textiles — end up in the landfill. And, because manufacturing textiles from virgin material is very resource intense, this is particularly wasteful. For example, it takes approximately 700 gallons of water to grow enough cotton to manufacture just one cotton t-shirt. And even though cotton crops cover just 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land, they use 25% of world’s insecticides. So don’t trash that old T – donate it — and Share the Love!

“Share the Love” with your used clothing and household goods. Why not start looking through your closets for stuff to donate today!

The “Share the Love” event is Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Hughes Middle School, 3846 California Ave. from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.
