Amateur and professional bakers are encouraged to enter the Community Action Team’s 2nd-annual “Long Beach Bake-Off” on Sun., Nov. 18 in the concert hall of Bay Shore Church, 5100 E. The Toledo in Belmont Shore, 90803. This year’s five categories are: pies; cakes; cupcakes; cookies; and brownies/bars/squares. Judging is based on taste, appearance, quality and first impression. Recipe ingredients can remain private.
Each category winners’ favorite local nonprofit or school will receive a $100 donation from CAT. Each winner will also get a blue ribbon and bragging rights for a year. More than three dozen bakers are expected to bring goodies to the event. Bakers can register in advance for $5 at www.JustinRudd.com/bakeoff.html, or they can register for $10 at the event. Bakers are welcome to enter multiple recipes in each category.
Baked goods should be delivered to the church hall from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Private judging begins at 5:30 p.m. and is followed by a public tasting reception at 7 p.m. The tasting reception is free for bakers in the contest, and $5 for all others, payable in cash at the door.
There is also a corporate division: SoCal bakeries, restaurants, delis, supermarkets and caterers are invited to enter the “corporate challenge” of the Long Beach Bake-Off. Just $5 for advance entries and $10 for same-day entries. Same categories/rules apply, but these corporate entries will be judged apart from the rest of the entries. In lieu of cash prizes, the corporate winners will receive blue ribbons, a frameable winners’ certificate, and HUGE bragging rights for a year!
To enter, bring one plate or platter of at least 24 cookies, bars, brownies, cupcakes, etc. with enough to feed three judges and 24 guests at the tasting reception. Cakes must remain whole. Entrants must bring their own serving utensil for their cake. Box mixes are not allowed. This contest is for individuals, not teams (partners cannot enter together). The contest is open to anyone in Southern California. Each entry must use baking as the primary method of preparation. You do not have to be present to win. Please indicate if nuts are in your recipe.
