Sip in the city Events Raise Money for Team Spirit Cancer Support

Cancer not only affects the body, it affects the mind and spirit. Over the past 14 years, Team Spirit Long Beach has raised more than $2.2 million for cancer support programs at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial.
Team Spirit Long Beach helps fund important psychosocial programs, such as Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education — one out of only two programs in the nation that offers a gynecologic peer-mentor program and support groups to anyone in the community seeking additional psychosocial cancer support regardless of their financial status.
For the past 14 years, thousands of survivors, family members and friends affected by breast and ovarian cancer have come together to support each other at Team Spirit Long Beach. Many of these community members have been brought together or mentored by cancer survivors from the Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education. The volunteer mentors are committed to assisting women through active peer support, in turn creating a strong fellowship that helps to drive gynecologic and breast cancer awareness beyond their personal experiences.
“More than two million philanthropic dollars have been raised through this event for breast and ovarian cancer programs at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial, specifically to fund a social worker, a psychosocial program, Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education, and a nurse navigator,” says Michele Roeder-Latimer, MBA, director, major gifts, Memorial Medical Center Foundation. “Most of these services, critical to a patient’s mental and emotional well-being, are not covered by health insurance. Thanks to the support of our community, and their dedication to the cause, we are able provide these services to all cancer patients and their families, regardless of their ability to pay.”
Community members can get involved with Team Spirit Long Beach by participating in upcoming SipLBC events or by joining the Corporate Team Challenge.
Sip LBC has partnered with Team Spirit Long Beach for two upcoming “Sip in the City” events during the inaugural Long Beach Wine, Beer & Spirits Week. Patrons can visit Sababa at MarketPlace Long Beach on Sept. 14 or Fuego at the Maya Hotel on Sept. 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. for cocktails and special menu options. Both events are ticketed, $75 per person. Portions of the proceeds will benefit Team Spirit, visit SipLBC.com for more details.
This year’s Team Spirit also has seen the incorporation of a Corporate Team Challenge for employers who wish to engage their employees in a large scale philanthropic service project. Employers who organize teams for Team Spirit can compete to win one of three titles: Most Spirit, Most Team Members and Most Fun(ds). For the winners of each title, prizes and special recognition will be awarded. To register your corporate team, call (562) 933-3500 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
