The City’s Bike Share program is making Long Beach a lot more livable.

“The Long Beach Bike Share program has been great for the health of our city and constituents,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “The program offers a fun way to get around the city and cuts down on motor vehicle use, which saves money and helps lower carbon emissions.”

More than 3,500 users have ridden 35,000 miles on the bright blue bicycles since the Bike Share program launched on March 19, 2016. That equates to 1.4 million calories burned. Bike Share users have also reduced carbon emissions by 31,223 pounds, or 51.9 metric tons, the equivalent to removing 11 passenger motor vehicles from the road for one year.

“Our Bike Share program is a huge success, and it’s only going to get better,” said City Manager Patrick H. West. “Every time someone rides a bike in Long Beach, we are a better city, and a more livable city.”

The Bike Share program continues to expand as more stations are added regularly. The system launched with 100 bicycles at 10 stations. Today, the system has 224 bicycles at 30 stations (areas include Belmont Shore, Downtown, East Village, and Alamitos Beach). When fully implemented, Long Beach Bike Share will include 50 stations equipped with 500 bikes.

Users have the option of renting the bike on an hourly basis for $7.00, or to purchase a membership monthly pass. A $15 pass will include 60 minutes of daily use time; a $20 pass will include 90 minutes a day. Up to six persons can share one membership account.

Users can assess availability of bicycles at a particular station via a mobile app for Apple and Android phones. The bikes have integrated locking mechanism and feature eight speeds. Moreover, the bicycles have adjustable seats and are adaptable to most users, accommodating riders of different fitness levels and range. Users are urged to use their own helmets.
