Documentarian Erin Davies and the World-Famous Fagbug

Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) will present “An Evening with Documentarian Erin Davies and the World-Famous Fagbug” on Thursday, April 25, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Beach Auditorium of the campus’ University Student Union.

On the 11th annual National Day of Silence in 2007, Davies was victim to a hate crime in Albany, New York.  Her VW Beetle was vandalized with the words “fag” and “u r gay” because of a rainbow sticker on her vehicle.  Despite initial shock and embarrassment, Davies decided to embrace what happened by leaving the graffiti on her car.  She took her car, now known worldwide as the “fagbug,” on a 58-day trip around the United States and Canada, and from that experience a documentary, titled “Fagbug,” was produced.

The presentation will include a lecture and questions-and-answer session with Davies from 5 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a free screening of the documentary of “Fagbug” from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  Additionally, the fagbug will be parked in front of the University Student Union by 4 p.m. for public viewing.

The mission of Fagbug is to raise awareness about hate crimes and homophobia, to give a voice for those who are silent, to inspire others to take a stand against bullies and to be an example of how to overcome obstacles in bringing creative projects to life.  In six years, Davies has driven the Fagbug to 48 states.  Just this month, her Kickstarter campaign was fully funded in order to transport her VW Beetle to two states she has yet to visit—Hawaii and Alaska.

“This year recent news headlines surrounding teen bullying and its devastaing effects could not be ignored,” said Michelle Stonis, lecturer in the Department of History and organizer of the event.  “Erin Davies is an award-winning documentarian who turned an unfortunate hate crime into a ‘teachable moment’ for all of us.

“I set out on a nearly five-month project to coordinate the Fagbug event on our campus after learning on Facebook that Erin was taking her world-famous VW Beetle around the country again,” she added.  “Erin and the Fagbug bring awareness to hate crimes, homophobia and tolerance in an interactive way.”

The event is sponsored by CSULB’s LGBT Resource Center, Gay Straight Alliance, American Studies Department, Communication Studies Department, History Department and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department.
