Rotaract Long Beach is seeking sponsors for the 82nd Annual Great Sand Sculpture Contest, a free, two-day community festival featuring professional and amateur sand sculpting, arts and crafts, live music and more.  This year’s event will take place on August 16-17 at Granada Beach. All event proceeds raised will benefit the Long Beach Library Foundation.

The Great Sand Sculpture Contest is a Long Beach tradition and one of the city’s most popular summer events. The past several years, more than 10,000 people attended the contest, raising more than $6,500 for various community organizations. Seven internationally recognized professional sand sculptors will construct the centerpiece of this year’s contest, projecting to attract even more community participants and attendees.

Rotaract is seeking day-of sponsorships and in-kind donations from area businesses and vendors.  A number of sponsorship levels are available to help offset the costs of the event, staffed entirely by volunteers, generating funds for the Library Foundation.

As mentioned, proceeds from the Great Sand Sculpture Contest will benefit the Long Beach Library Foundation. This year’s theme is “FIZZ, BOOM, READ!” follows the nationwide library summer reading program theme for 2014. This year’s theme helps to promote the importance of Science and STEM education. Sand castles will likely be built around science fiction books, chemistry, mad scientists, experiments and more.

“The Great Sand Sculpture Contest is the ultimate community event–it’s family-friendly, fun and organized for a good cause,” says Katie Gaston, Rotaract Long Beach Past President. “The contest not only offers a variety of activities, but it’s a great way for Southern California residents to support a crucial organization actively promoting childhood and adult literacy in our greater community – the Library Foundation.”
