EverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Lisa Wibroe, Curator/ project manager of LB Open Studio Tour, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like having a business in 6th & 7th district.

How long have you been in business?

The LB Open Studio Tour commences on the second weekend of October during Long Beah Arts Month. We have been an annual event for the past 3 years.

Describe your business:

LB Open Studio Tour provide a venue every year during Long Beach Arts Month in October. This year, local professional artists open their private studios for the public to enjoy as a self-guided tour on October 13th & 14th from noon to 5 PM. Great effort was made to create hubs in 3 different areas in Long Beach. The close proximity of some studios makes it easy to visit all 3 areas during the weekend. This is a free event!
Live music and refreshments can be found at select locations. A map and info provided at

Why did you start LB Open Studio Tour?

I had been invited to participate in an art tour that took place every other year and decided it would be exciting to offer such a tour annually and during Long Beach Arts Month and National Arts and Humanities Month in October, and the Arts Council of Long Beach was supportive of the idea.

What makes LB Open Studio Tour stand out?

The LB Open Studio Tour is the only self-guided art studio tour in the city during October’s Long Beach Arts Month. The public gets a chance to meet local artists in their own communities and peek into their private environments.
Art is also available at wholesale prices.
This is a two day art event that also offers some live music and refreshments…all for free!

What is the biggest success LB Open Studio Tour has had?

Every year, the LB Open Studio Tour grows in terms of visitors to artists’ studios. It is fast becoming a staple for LB Arts Month that art enthusiasts look forward to annually. Artists on the tour are able to exhibit and sell their work at wholesale prices. It is also a great opportunity for gallery curators to discover new talent for their exhibitions.

What is your favorite part of running your business?

The sense of discovery in finding talented artists and creating communities amongst them.

What are the biggest challenges you face?

Artists are a different breed…not always easy to work with in terms of follow-through. Artists are dealing with their creative side which doesn’t always align with the business side.

What unique talents do you bring to LB Open Studio Tour?

I hold a degree in Fine Art from CSULB. I have experience as a school administrator which honed my organizational and business skills. I also have experience in curating gallery exhibitions.

How are you involved with the community?

I am not only involved with the arts in my community, but am also an environmentalist. As a founding member of Wrigley is Going Green, our mission is to plant new trees and help save old ones. We have coordinated many tree plantings and work well with the City. I also serve a a commissioner for the Sustainable City Commission for the sixth district.

Do you have any future plans for LB Open Studio Tour?

LB Open Studio Tour would like to become an anticipated annual event for Long Beach Arts Month. We would like to grow larger each year, not only in terms of attendees, but also by including more artists and creating more art studio hubs throughout the city.
