How long has Meals on Wheels of Long Beach, Inc. been around? Did it start in Long Beach?

Stared in 1971 by Soroptmist International Of Long Beach.

Describe Meals on Wheels of Long Beach, Inc.. Tell us a little about your nonprofit, your mission, the people you serve or your goals.

Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) provides 2 nutritionally balanced meals weekdays, with a friendly visit, to homebound seniors, veterans and disabled individuals in Long Beach and Signal Hill. The program is designed to bring nourishment and social interaction to individuals who would otherwise be alone and hungry.

How is Meals on Wheels of Long Beach, Inc. different from similar nonprofits?

We receive no government funding and rely solely on the community for financial support.

How is Meals on Wheels of Long Beach, Inc. involved with the community?

MOWLB serves 250 homebound individuals each day with the help of volunteers throughout the Long Beach community.

What are some of the biggest successes Meals on Wheels of Long Beach, Inc. has had?

Becoming a member of the Long Beach Elder Abuse Prevention Team and training all MOWLB volunteers to be aware of and report elder abuse & neglect.

What is the most rewarding part of running Meals on Wheels of Long Beach, Inc.?

Caring for our very grateful clients and working alongside volunteers who do the job of feeding our clients with great joy and love.

What are the challenges you face — as a nonprofit, as an advocacy group, or in your industry?

Our greatest challenge is to provide meals to low-income individuals who have no ability to pay the nominal cost for the meal service of $6.50 a day. We turn to the community to help support this cost through the Adopt-a-Homebound Neighbor program.

What are the future plans for Meals on Wheels of Long Beach, Inc.?

Future plans include involving other nonprofit organizations in providing additional services to our homebound clients and increase our fundraising efforts.

Do you have any special events or fundraisers you’d like to tell us about?

3rd Saturdays Gourmet Food Truck Night at 317 Termino Ave., Long Beach 90814. from 5pm to 9pm.
